"Dialect, Culture and Society in Eastern Arabia" by "Clive Holes", (3 vols.), c. 1999-2000, Brill Pub. The same title is used atop all three volumes. Vol. 1: Glossary. Vol. II: Ethnographic Texts. Vol. III: Dialect Description. (Each volume was originally priced between $175 - $450); so use caution in determining which volume you are buying.) [From publisher's comments]: "The primary objective of (these volumes) is to give a detailed description of the pre-oil era of Arabic dialects and culture of the island state of Bahrain, as spoken by uneducated Bahrainis aged forty or over in the mid-1970s." The linguistic descriptions contain sectarian views (Bahraini Sunnis & Bahraini Shia) and women. Some of the topics discussed include marriage customs, family lifes, traditional beliefs and practices, popular culture, children's games, agriculture, fishing - just to name a few. Regarding Vol. 1 (Glossary) the "words" are not arranged by how one would normally expect: Adam, Anglo, appendix, apple.... The "words" are listed by "consonants" without vowels: such as: FTT (fatat: crumbs); FTH (fatah : open), FTKH (fatxa : toe-ring), FTSH (fattas : inspect; fattasa: fortune-teller), FTQ (ftag : hernia).... as you can see from the aforementioned examples, the problem is that even the consonants are not in "alpha" order! Fortunately, behind each actual Arabic word (as it is spoken - there is no actual Arabic script!) an English transliteration is provided. Besides single words, sometimes, entire phrases are provided in both languages.
