I enjoy many different genres, but when military SF is done well, it really stands out in my memory. I’m going to remember this little gem and come back to savor it now and then. It is a wonderful blend of the grim realities of combat, the superstitions that arise among combat units, gritty heroism and honest fear... and the tiny improbable details of life that come to stand for all of it together. If someone on Topatoco were to make a convincing replica of the thing that takes the place of her medal in the box (no spoilers!)I would buy it.

The story stands well on its own, even though it is a short story from author Marko Kloos' 'Frontline / Terms of Enlistment' series.Engaging narrative where space pilot Lt Halley loves and fights in her Lucky dropship.Lucky Thirteen was the first story I read in it. It led me to read the first book, buy and get ready to read the second book.Enjoy the series!

This long short story demands one's attention right away, keeps it and ends in a thoroughly satisfying manner, with a bit of fun along the way, at least if one accepts certain basic premises, such as the capabilities of weapons and warplanes, the continuing fact of strife expanding into the solar system, etc., as well as the all but primal urge certain people have to not only fight but FLY. Reasonably logical military "feel" of the ambience and the best cover illustration of the series, to my mind. Flyers may be a bit uncomfortable with right-seat command instead of left-seat, as well as Army ranks for all, including "Fleet" personnel, but that does hold through all of Kloos' s works that I've read. Obrigado, Marko, e parabens--thank you and congratulations!

Great little side-story but recommend not to read it until after Chains of Command, after we know Halley better as a character. Missing details like other novels in the series, like why they’re in the Formalhaut system or even what class of ship that they’re on. Would love to see a reunion with her crew chief Staff Sergeant Fisher somewhere in another sequel in the Frontlines series, or maybe the Recon troops with Capt Grayson or some connection to Dimitri maybe through his husband who was part of the pursuing Russians. Lots of possibility here ... overall a quick read that makes a great little sub-story to the Frontlines main story-line.Maybe next time we’ll be treated to a backstory on Constable Guest and how he ended up on New Svalbard? - that’s a story that must be worth telling!

It says it's a short story, and surprise! It is!Which means that it's short. And maybe the characters aren't as fully developed as they might be in a novel. (Although if you've read "Terms of Enlistment" you'll already know Halley.) And maybe the plot isn't long and involved and full of unexpected twists. But that's how a short story works. And because this story is set in the "Terms of Enlistment" world, it actually fills a rather unique niche - one that I quite like about series books, and one that I reckon more writers could make use of. Stories like this give us a little taste of something outside what we can find in the novels. They keep us interested and, most importantly, entertained while we're waiting for the next instalment."Lucky Thirteen" delivers like Karl Malone. It does its job and does it with style. If you enjoyed "Terms" don't miss out on this little slice of action. It might not be a full meal, but it will keep you from starving until the next course arrives.

This is a short story about a combat drop ship in the fairly far future. I think the story is in the same universe as Terms of Enlistment. We are told the back story of the ship from its last commander. The ship survives a few catastophic events where its past crews were lost so it has a infamous rep and it is getting old. The new commander likes the way she flies over the newer versions and because of the slight she gets on a major attack formation she and her new crew are spared in a crippling ambush. All in all I liked this little short story. Good job.

I've already read everything in this series but this short story is not his best. It's an account of a short battle and the experience of a pilot and her drop ship. I read it in half an hour. it's far too short.

I normally don't buy books. I get them for no out of pocket costs from my library. This story was the exception and was worth the money. If you can get the hard cover or paperbacks from your local library, otherwise spend the money and buy all the books in this series.

Review

“A complex and unsettling novel . . . about genius and obsession . . . mirroring the thought process of a compulsive mind.” —The New York Times Book Review“Bernhard writes like a sacred monster. . . . He is a remarkable literary performer: a man who goes to extremes in ways that vivify our sense of human possibilities, however destructive.” — The Wall Street Journal“Bernhard is one of the masters of contemporary European fiction . . . After Kafka’s and Canetti’s, his sensibility is one of the most acute, the most capable of exemplary images and gestures, in modern literature.” — George Steiner

Thomas Bernhard writes, "When we meet the very best, we have to give up, I thought." This is a book about the agony, envy, and resignation of not being a genius. Do you require such a book? I needed it, though I did not know that. It's also a book about the misery of inheriting a vast sum of money, /not/ a book I needed, particularly, though I was so hooked I went right along with it.Of all the books I've read that consist of a single, unbroken, paragraph -- Garcia Marquez, Beckett, Saramago -- this was my far the most effortless, the most compulsively readable. My bitterness, I discovered, was downright ecstatic to have some company. It warms like a bonfire, piling on obsessions, repetitions, and brilliance, and some of perhaps the best sentences I've ever read: "A person can be ruined for life in Chur, even if he only spends one night there."This must be a good place to start reading Thomas Bernhard, since I'd never read any of his novels before this one (I'd read only stories of "The Voice Imitator") and now I am determined to read everything. It is an oddly addictive voice; a week later I am still cross I don't have more Bernhard to read.In the midst of investigating misery, ways of surviving it are found and lost, then found and lost again. Art, for one, though it is found to be a most uncertain raft.

I loved the idea of this book (I’m a classical musician myself) but had to put it down halfway through, which is something I almost never do. It read like one long run-on paragraph that never got to the point. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, but nothing ever did. Maybe that was the point? Maybe some people enjoy this style of neurotic stagnation? I honestly cannot believe I am putting a book down and not finishing it. I just couldn’t. Too many other books on my to-be-read shelf.

Loved it. A sad and bitter trip to Austria, the narrator’s memories of Glenn Gould and the different ways his contemporaries reacted to his genius were both funny and scathing. A really interesting read, excellent writing.

Here, you have a story told in complete narration inside the primary character's head. This story takes you through the landscape of Austria , completely inside the mind of one person. It is a fascinating story and means to story telling. A definite read for anyone who enjoys something a little outside the ordinary.

Hysterical and affirmative. So much self loathing it's curves in on itself. Great writing about a sad guy and a suicidal guy and how they cope by trying to figure out what the social sciences are. No the human sciences I meant. A true loser. Blame Glenn Guilds genius. He is a madman like Artaud.

This classic is worth reading as period piece, but it certainly is depressing. Written soon after WW2, it presents a bleak view of humanity. It reminded me of Kafka, but without without the spark of hope that his protagonists have.

Very gritty and mind blowing when it comes to trying to achieve perfection at its most supreme level.

Wonderful!
