Seems kind of goofy to make a comic based off a movie based off a comic, but it is great. If you are a fan of the original Mirage series, you will like the style of the presentation and the action. The comic very closely follows the movie, which is fine since I love the film. This book is slightly bigger than the original trade paper back released before. It is also in color which I don't mind all too much. The part I enjoyed the most were Kevin Eastman's notes and layouts in the back. The rough draft spans the entire length of the finished story and you can see the creative process. Kevin makes notes in the margins about things he wants to change or revise later. It's pretty cool to see how things evolve and how panels shrink or shift based on his process.Very cool release, pick it up
IDW have their heart in the right place but sadly their heads are firmly placed somewhere else. This current trend of "re-coloring" the classic books is both confusing and utterly frustrating. Let me break it down.First off the presentation is great. The book is giant, cover has some cool design work, and the pages are nice and glossy. The rough pages in the back are a nice touch and using different paper works quite well. I cannot fault them for the effort put into it. What I question is if the effort was needed? This comic came out in two formats. The first was a black and white version published by Mirage. It had a few extra pages that were not present in the Archie version. One looked dark and moody with the classic Mirage toning/shading the other was colored and inked quite well and looks good even to this day. With that said one has to question the decision to re-color this. To be entirely honest it looks awful. Being that I own the other two books I did a side by side comparison and there's a lot of issues here. For one there is no shading. All the colors are flat and boring. It looks like someone took the paint bucket tool to every image and called it a day. They even did this to the original cover images. Now I know IDW finds it necessary to re-color everything that wasn't done by Eastman and Laird but it baffles me they would re-color this when a color version already exists. They don't re-color the Archie comics they collect and those could actually benefit from it as the original printing was cheap causing several things to be colored incorrectly.Speaking of there are a lot of bizarre choices here in terms of colors. The turtles belts are grey and their arm bands brown. Why? They weren't that color in the original comic nor the film, this makes no sense. In the scene where they cut the pizza up it's colored black, like it's burnt. Again why? Then there's stuff like page 28 where they missed a few spots and there's random white outlines around the turtles. It looks cheap. Last thing I am going to mention is Shredder. Not sure why they chose to do this but he is all a dark blue color, including his hands and arms, except for the rim of his helmet and belt which are red. Again no idea what they were thinking here. It's not even consistent with the re-coloring they did on the covers where he looks more like he did in the film.I really have to pose the question of why IDW thinks the re-coloring is needed. I assume it's to sell the book to a younger audience who can't handle reading a black and white comic. Thing is a younger audience isn't going to care either way. The people who want these are the hardcore fans and hardcore fans do not want to see artwork they like scribbled all over by amateurs. Imagine someone re-coloring Steve Ditko's Spider-man books or Jack Kirby's Fantastic Four? You would think Marvel are stark raving mad. It does not help the situation that Tundra did Archie re-colors in the past that were gorgeously hand painted and First did as well for Mirage. Some of those books are almost 30 years old now and they look better then this. If the new is not better then the old, then stick with the old.So to sum it up this whole thing just frustrates me. It's a great idea, great presentation, but sadly the core book is just a sloppily re-colored version of the original. While the storyboards are a nice touch it's not enough to justify the price just to see some rough doodles. Considering you can find decent copies of both the Mirage and Archie versions for under $5 elsewhere this book is not only the worst version of the comic but wildly over priced.Like a sucker I continue to purchase these because most of the Turtles catalog had yet to be collected prior to IDW taking over the franchise. I hold out hopes that if these sell well enough they may decide to release the original black and white versions with as much care put into them as these terrible re-productions.
This is another hardcover "special edition" to add to the list of numerous IDW turtle releases. Sadly I haven't come across this in digital format so after like a year I caved in & purchased it only because I'm a Mirage Studios freak. It'd be great if sometime in the near future IDW would re-release other Mirage cult titles like Gizmo, Puma Blues, Plastron Cafe, etc. But I digress. I did own the comic of this film adaptation way back when the first film came out but it's certainly nice to have this in an over sized hardcover & while I do like the new coloring, seeing it in it's classic black & white would've been great too. The sketch section at the second half of this book is an excellent addition as well & honestly the best incentive to own this. This is definitely a nice trip down memory lane for any old school turtles fan.
Well first off in 1990 I was 2 years old. I discovered the Ninja Turtles very early on and as most kids of the 90s was hooked on anything Ninja Turtle. I remember watching the first two films constantly on VHS and for better or worse saw the third film in theaters. I am 26 years old now and this is my first purchase of a Ninja Turtles Comic. After watching the recently released documentary Turtle Power The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I was interested in picking up some of the original material. The book is much larger than I expected and is printed beautifully in full color on glossy paper. The colors are very vibrant and pop very well. I have not read it yet so I can't talk about the story much at this time but from what I can tell its a version of the first film. I am not sure if the comic was published before, after,or during the films original run but I look forward to any possible differences between the two. The second part of the book from what I can tell has the entire comic in its production phase with line art and notes to go along with it. I am very happy with this purchase and recommend it to any turtle fan or any fan of the first turtle film.
