The Dreamer's Book of the Dead: A Soul Traveler's Guide to Death, Dying, and the Other Side, by Robert Moss

Review

“The Dreamer’s Book of the Dead is one of the finest books I have read in many a year. It offers deep and healing insight into the journey beyond death, which will be a help to anyone who has lost a loved one. More than that it offers wisdom for living our lives in powerful and spirit-filled ways. With each new book, but especially with this one, Robert Moss adds to his reputation as one of the greatest spiritual teachers of our time. Outstanding!” (David Spangler, author of Blessing: The Art and the Practice and Everyday Miracles)“Since time immemorial, dreams of the dead have been a common occurrence. Our scientifically based culture has attempted to close this door of communication, but has failed; dreams of the dead continue to occur, as always. Robert Moss sheds light on how to enter this doorway and benefit from the wisdom and comfort that often result from these experiences.” (Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words, Recovering the Soul, and The Extraordinary Healing Powe)“Robert Moss’s ambition to give us a Western Book of the Dead has been fully realized in this captivating and inspiring guide to the land of the dead. Moss shocks and thrills by revealing the hidden truth--that the Otherworld is in fact the familiar landscape of our dreams, where we go every night. There we can, if we intend it, meet up with our lost loved ones and encounter the great mentors of the past. Moss’s own mentor is the great Irish poet W. B. Yeats, with whom he has in-depth, meaningful conversations. “Moss reminds us that by our night dreaming and waking dreams we prepare for the great journey to the world beyond the mists the Celts call the Blessed Isles. Our dreams are the measure of what we aspire to, and it is in this life, through practicing our imagination, that we can draw our roadmap and our destination. For a better death and life beyond death--but also for a better life in the world of the living--do not miss this extraordinary book from a true Western Master.” (Catherine Shainberg, author of Kabbalah and the Power of Dreaming)“An important work for a world in which we quickly dispose of our dead and move on--or don’t, being left isolated with our grief in the only existence we know. Robert Moss shows us how false a view this is. He opens us to the other side of life--to our multi-dimensional existence through which we travel every night. Learn to become a voyager of the imagination where you can meet with loved ones and guides in a place as true as this one. Take a guided tour of the land of the dead, as recorded by explorers through the centuries. Learn how to communicate with and assist the dead and let them help you. “This book is filled with stories from people who have taken Moss’s workshops and discovered for themselves the knowledge and serenity that comes from contact with the other side. It also reveals the mentoring relationship that Moss established with William Butler Yeats, demonstrating how such a communion with spirits (whether within or without) can be a source of strength and encouragement. An inspiring book that should be close at hand for whenever the other world comes calling or we have need of knowledge of the other side.” (Mary K. Greer, author of Women of the Golden Dawn and Tarot for Your Self)"Here are tools and guidance to help truly begin to heal that relationship with death/dying." (Victoria Vlach, Dream Network, Autumn 2005)"I found this to be an important work for anyone who wishes to work with dreamtime, for what ever reason. . . . it gives the reader a way to go into their dreams, to become a part of their dreams, and to make their dreams work for them. If you want to work with your dreams, and you want to understand the death experience, then this is the book for you." (Bonnie Cehovet, Angelfire.com, Jan 2006)"Moss is a compelling, generous teacher with an astonishing depth and breadth of esoteric knowledge. Approach The Dreamer’s Book of the Dead when you’re ready to go slowly and absorb its heady, powerful themes and meditations." (Eva Yaa Asantewaa, Book ‘em, May 12, 2005)"This nonfiction book is identified as a soul traveler's guide to death, dying, and the other side, and it is precisely that! It has a gusto and life all its own. Robert Moss is to be congratulated on a fine work, one that is informative and enjoyable to read." (Lee Prosser, Ghostvillage.com, Jan.11, 2006)"Dreamer's Book of the Dead is nearly an escort service, offering insights on dreams, the afterlife, and healing." (The Midwest Book Review, May 2006)"It's a book which lingers in the back of your mind for a long time after you've read it. Don't give it away. . . " (Marilis Hornidge, Book Bag, March 23, 2006)

NEW AGE / DREAMS “In this captivating and inspiring guide to the land of the dead, Moss shocks and thrills by revealing the hidden truth--that the Otherworld is in fact the familiar landscape of our dreams, where we go every night. For a better death and life beyond death, do not miss this extraordinary book.” --Catherine Shainberg, author of Kabbalah and the Power of Dreaming “An important work for a world in which we quickly dispose of our dead and move on. Learn to become a voyager of the imagination where you can meet with loved ones and guides in a place as true as this one.” --Mary K. Greer, author of Women of the Golden Dawn and Tarot for Your Self We yearn for contact with departed loved ones. We miss them, ache for forgiveness or closure, and long for confirmation that there is life beyond physical death. In The Dreamer’s Book of the Dead, Robert Moss explains that we have entirely natural contact with the departed in our dreams, when they come visiting and we may travel into their realms. As we become active dreamers, we can heal our relationship with the departed and move beyond the fear of death. We also can develop the skills to function as soul guides for others, helping the dying to approach the last stage of life with courage and grace, opening gates for their journeys beyond death, and even escorting them to the Other Side. Drawing on a wealth of personal experience as well as many ancient and indigenous traditions, Moss offers stories to inspire us and guide us. He shares his extraordinary visionary relationship with the poet W. B. Yeats, whose greatest ambition was to create a Western Book of the Dead to feed the soul hunger of our times. Moss teaches us the truth of Chief Seattle’s statement that “there is no death; we just change worlds.” ROBERT MOSS survived three near-death experiences in childhood and has been dreaming with the departed all of his life. He is the creator of Active Dreaming, an original synthesis of dreamwork and shamanic techniques for empowerment and healing. A former university professor of ancient history at the Australian National University, he is a novelist, shamanic counselor, and the author of Conscious Dreaming, Dreamgates, and Dreamways of the Iroquois. He lives in upstate New York.

This is a fascinating book at a subject most of us shrug off to the nutters, as a Brit might say. This combines dealing with those who have died mostly through communication and interactions in the dream state. Full of stories and examples. I like that it has concrete examples rather than tedious and boring prose exposition. Highly entertaining and informative at the same time. I have read other Robert Moss books and heard some of his MP3s, and this is markedly different in content.

I give this 4 stars because I don't care for all the short stories of other peoples experiences with spirits and death. The book is filled with it. I was expecting more of an informational guide on contacting spirits on the other side not short stories. However I have gained some vital info from this book. You be the judge.

If you are looking for real exercises or instructions on how to explore the world of those who passed on, this book does not offer it. Despite the title "a soul traveller's guide to death dying and the other side", this book does not guide the reader on how to do it.The book goes on and on about a mix of new age/spiritist/spiritualist/shamanic/theosophical meanderings, supposedly telling you exactly what happens after death. Out of the 320 pages, there are basically about 5 exercises that could be condensed in 5 pages or less. And oh, before i forget, there is an appendix with a list of all the products and services offered by the author. One of the most nonsensical sections is the one about regret. In preparing to die, we should make sure we have no regrets. The author suggests an exercise where readers can examine their lives and make sure they do what they need to do now, while there's still time, so that when they die, they will have no regrets. Huh? What human being has no regrets? And what is wrong about having them? They can be excellent stepping stones for growth and transformation.

This book is truly exceptional... a real look at what"it" truly is... this should be required reading in high school to eliminate gangs and their violence and all the negative crap that is happening in our world...start your beginning involvement to a better life for all thru "MAAT" {look it up}

I think our ancestors knew some things we've forgotten. I'm not sure WHY we forgot but it's definitely time to start remembering. This is the third or fourth book by Robert Moss I've read and he always stirs me in ways I can't fully express. This book reminded me of one morning when I was ten and I got up and found my grandmother crying. I asked her why and she recounted a dream that she'd had thirty years earlier that had accurately predicted the death of her only son. All of our lives are full of such anomalies, such little bits of magic, until we quickly sweep them under the carpet. Conscensus reality is like a carefully constructed stage set we all agree to believe in--until we see some pipes or wiring sticking out where they shouldn't be. We quickly scissor those moments out of our awareness because they don't fit. Those moments are what this book is about. "The Dreamer's Book of the Dead" reminded me of another book I read called "Lincoln's unknown private life, an oral history by his black housekeeper." At one point in this book this very ancient black lady (who reminded me of rosa parks) reported discussing the after-life with Lincoln and concluded by saying, "When you get right down to it, the only thing Mr. Lincoln REALLY believed in was dreams." Indeed. Interesting an iconic figure like Lincoln, at the center of our culture, should hold views like that--and yet nobody ever talks about it. It's swept under the carpet. This is a book about bringing things OUT from under that cultural carpet, a book about remembering things our ancestors knew. My point is this--Moss's book says that being visited by the dead in dreams is something our ancestors accepted. Then he takes you on a very entertaining spiritual tour of the various imaginal realms where the dead might reside (and into which we will all be moving before too long). He weaves that together with several colorful threads: the mystical beliefs of that arch-romantic William Butler Yeats, and that fascinating gathering of geniuses, cranks and visionaries known as The Golden Dawn who revived western magic in the early twentieth century. It's not all entertainment, though, he offers practical advice on how to deal with spirits or ghosts in various stages of stuckness in the after-life. (Advice I hope I never personally need). As always he mentions, in passing, things that fascinate and tweak the imagination--for example, british magicians (golden dawn?) battling nazi occultists during world war two. (Ha! What could be more fun than that?) But what I really enjoyed about this was the sense that you journey back into the ancestral mists to revisit the spiritual beliefs that sustained our celtic ancestors for uncounted centuries before the coming of Christianity. That's actually one of the things about this I resonated to most strongly. And, as he makes clear, encounters with spirits (humans who are "dead"), faeries (non-human energies), and various magical beings isn't really uncommon. If you think about your life, you've had such encounters. It's just that we live in an era when we are encouraged to screen such anomalies out of our awareness (that cultural rug again). How sad and how boring. It denies a large part of who and what we are. Wouldn't you really rather open the door to the wider reality? What if we spun that oppressive cultural rug into a flying carpet? If you agree, Moss will give you flying lessons.

What an amazing story! What a special guy Robert Moss is. I have ordered 2 more of his books. Wish he would come to Rochester, NY!

i am a huge fan of Robert Moss! i am going to acquire every book eventually. very highly recommended.

Although not a new book, I consider it one of the best books on the subject. Robert Moss never disappoints with his very engaging writing style. Quite an interesting book!

I have been working in water and desalination in Australia for 38 years, currently with the National Centre of Excellence in Desalination. In assessing the worth of a text book, I like to see a wide range of topics that are well organised by an author who has practical experience. A poor book has a lot of words but little information. Mr Voutchkov's book has a great deal of useful material on a very broad range of subjects, but is concise and has a good list of reference material for those who want more. I found it a pleasure to read. It touches on all the important facets of the planning, design and operation of desalination plants and is well illustrated, interesting and easy to read.To test the practicality of the book, I gave it to our technician Mr George Horvath, a mechanical fitter with more than 15 years' experience in all aspects of reverse osmosis plant design, construction and operation. He said: "Being an experienced desalination practitioner and avid reader of numerous technical publications, I found it difficult to put this book down. It is extremely well segmented from the contents through to the index and it is easy for anyone with limited water treatment knowledge to grasp the basic concepts."So for people involved in research, designing and building plants or developing water policy, and even for those who are not in the water industry but have an interest in the subject, this is a book which contains a wealth of information. Desalination is a large and rapicdly growing industry worldwide and will help sustain the lives of more and more people in the future as population grows and weather and climate become less predictable.

This book is quite helpful in learning basic engineering of membrane desalination. With the author’s wealth experience in engineering of real membrane desalination plants and pilot testing, this book covers the entire range of membrane desalination engineering including not only review of process but also real plants’ current situation, challenges and specific solutions. This book provides us with the detailed description on water quality characterization of each source of intake, each kind of pretreatment process such as conventional and membrane processes as well as RO process and post treatment. Although the author does not devote much space to RO membrane, this book is quite useful with extensive and practical information based on the author’s actual experiences at plants. In view of the increase in desalination plants constructed all over the world, a larger number of people who engage in the plant projects including engineers, managers and operators could get benefits from the book. In addition, the discussions on discharge management of desalination plants suggest a way for addressing the global environment problems. I would like to recommend this book as reference to engineering, designing, planning and trouble shooting of membrane desalination plants.Dr. Masaru KuriharaFellow of Toray Industries, Inc.Senior Scientific Director of “Mega-ton Water System”, Funding Program for World Leading Innovation R&D on Science & Technology, Japan

This is a college text book and a good book for serious engineers. I don't know if Nickoly Voutchkov is the smartest man in the room, but I know it isn't me. I am glad that at my age I can still follow this stuff. I hope that people can make good use of the information

Very poor quality of tables and pictures. More that just "blurred". In some of them you'd need luck if you want to distinguish or read the text inserted. The main text is well structured and technically good though. Strictly, the book, as a reference in desalination, deserves at least a 4-5 star rating, but it is shame what the editor has done with the images. A 2 stars review is even generous.

Helps me understand the desalination world in a much better and structured wat

Poor quality of pictures

The World Bank sponsored 2030 Water Resources Group foresees increasingly severe water shortages as the global population soars by about 74 million people a year. At current rates of growth, the demand for water worldwide in the year 2030 may exceed supplies by 40 percent. According to Acciona Agua, an International Spanish desalination company, this is leading to growth of the global desalination industry to about 15% a year.At this critical junction it becomes more imperative than ever to ensure construction of the most efficient cost effective desalination plants based on the best available know how. This important goal is prominently served by publication of the authoritative treatise of Nikolay Voutchkov - Desalination Engineering Planning and Design. Mr. Voutchkov is a foremost expert well known for his extensive industrial experience and his numerous desalination related publications. The last decade has seen significant advances in desalination technologies, particularly in RO desalination processes which are the main focus of the book. The author deserves praise on his painstaking efforts to provide full coverage of all significant advances. Another noteworthy aspect of the book is that numerous illustrative design examples, design criteria and design data accompany the text and facilitate understanding of the treated systems. As the recipient of the 2012 Landau Prize Desalination Award, I highly recommend this book as a comprehensive authoritative monograph on planning, design and operation of desalination plants.

We first discovered Tacky on my 5 year old’s Kindle. We loved him (and Goodly, Lovely, Neatly, Angel, and Perfect) so much that we bought this to have as a book in our library. It’s a favorite for both our 5 year old and our 3 year old.I have a feeling we will own the entire Tacky collection soon.

We just received this as part of our monthly Amazon Kids Book Box. My 3.5yr old LOVES it! I make sure to do different voices especially for when Tacky is singing horribly and he just laughs and tries to sing just as bad as Tacky. Fun book to read :)

Was kinda odd. My toddler wasn’t a fan.

Tee Hee! Tacky the penguin is an oddball or at least that is what his penguin friends Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly and Perfect think! Why? Well let's see... Tacky doesn't greet them quietly and politely, he doesn't march in time, he can't dive gracefully and you should hear him sing! One day however, the hunters arrived. What do all the other penguins do? Hide! What does Tacky do?A truly delightful story reinforcing the fact to young children that it is alright to be different and in fact being different can, at times, have a distinct advantage. I am not advocating bad manners here nor do I think the author is either. Balance is everything but children do not have to all be the same nor do they all need to follow the crowd. Individuality is the key. This book was on our son's second grade "Suggested Reading List" so I purchased this USED from Amazon. I was not required to do a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

My kids had this book, they are now 27 and 24. We needed to buy a book for a baby shower and Tacky was THE one! Because as every Tacky reader knows -- "Tacky is on odd bird, but a nice bird to have around." <3

Great book for teaching acceptance and how our appearance doesn't define who we are.

Tacky is silly and funny. It’s a good book that kids laugh at. It’s nice to realize that it’s ok to be silly and odd because you can still be a good friend.

My niece is a teacher in Arkansas. Her 1st grade class is sorely lacking in enjoyable books for afternoon reading. I purchased every 'Tacky' title available on Amazon and sent them down to her. I figured penguins in Arkansas would be a novelty for the kids, and they LOVED it!!The 1st graders love Tacky and his crazy adventures; he's always faced w a perplexing problem, but seems to make the right (sometimes tough) choice to solve it. Good lessons for children!

My sister loves this book. More than just pot holders n scarves! Plenty of great ideas and informative too.

I am a new weaver in the past six months. While I like and use online sources to learn new techniques, there is nothing like a book for continuous reference. The writing is clear and detailed. The pictures show exactly what you need to see clearly. The conversion charts for those of us who started out as knitters are extremely helpful. I expect this to be a "go to" book for learning and inspiration for future projects. If you want clear direction direction on how to warp, common weaving problems, explanation of terms, how to calculate what you will need for a project and how to make your weaving look professional and interesting this is a great place to start.

Concise, cohesive, and packed full of knowledge, this book will get you to not only find your rigid heddle loom but also to explore and use it to its fullest. There is a comparison of all looms currently available with pros and cons of each listed. That is just the start. I was blown away to see a chapter on tapestry -let alone all the laces and how to adapt four shaft draw downs. This book will not disappoint you. Just get it and start exploring!

I've just started learning to weave, and I refer to this book frequently. It's inspiring, easy to understand, and very helpful. I have the Kindle edition, and it is very satisfactory on a tablet--you can move around easily in the book, enlarge the many photographs to see detail, and the fonts are very readable. I am usually reluctant to buy these sorts of references on the Kindle, so it's worth noting.

This book has newer ideas of inventive weaving I never seen in any other books on Ridged Heddle Weaving. They also show you how to calculate how much yarn you're going to need for a large project like a blanket. I'm pleased with this book. Plus it has photographs of different looms including ones I own.

It’s been less than 24 hours since I recieved this book, bought at the reccomendation of the weaving expert at Webs (America’s largest yarn store which I am so lucky to live less than an hour from). I was initiallly overwhelmed by receiving a loom for Xmas, as a avid knitter, this is a fiber art I didn’t know I wanted to try. I am on page 77 and have learned so much and am so excited to get warping! I’m trying to be careful and learn in advance of my first try so I don’t get frustrated by messing up right away. The book has clear explanations and photos, addresses the right way and wrong way to do things while still taking into account that some weavers may want to just jump right in and learn on the fly... there are trouble shooting sections for those weavers. The book addresses color theory in chapter 4 which is a nice addition as so much of weaving is about color combination. I think this book appears to be the perfect first weaving book for anyone with a rigid heddle loom. It boils everything down so you aren’t overwhelmed, it has a light touch teaching style but is rich in content. I think it should accompany any gift of a loom actually - help a New weaver get off on the right foot.

Sure wish I had this book back when I started RH weaving, but I want to emphasize that this is not just a book for beginners by any means. It goes into so many things including supplemental inlay, the Theo Moorman technique, leno lace, tartan, woven shibori, using two and even three heddles, shadow weave and all kinds of things I’ve never taken time to explore. She includes great instructions, phenomenal and easy to see photos and projects that I’d actually want to make. She has chapters on troubleshooting problems and illustrates specifically how to fix things like selvedge problems, frowning or smiling selvedges, replacing broken warp threads as well as an in-depth chapter on finishing. The subtitle of this book says “Discover the Full Potential of the Rigid Heddle Loom For Beginners and Beyond. The “and beyond” part is definitely true. This book is worth every penny and even has some applications that I think beginning floor loom weavers would find helpful too.

This book is an interesting mix of beginners tips (with a section called “tech support”) and seemingly complicated solutions. Or maybe it just seems that way to me since I’m new to it! I do like the photos of each way you could be messing up your project. Either way, I feel confident in using this as a first timer’s reference book. I also enjoyed the bright colors used- sometimes when it’s all pastel you have to wonder if the author assumes we all live in Florida… Anyway, there are several projects to weave (pillow covers and kitchen towels in addition to traditional scarves) and advice on choosing yarn and equipment, and suggestions for weaving techniques. Overall I’d say the projects were the best part of it, because normally what I see are things I’m not interested in making, but these photos were pretty inspiring.

I've read "hands on heddle weaving" and snatches of other rigid heddle books, but this one is by far my favorite. For one thing, it's not dry as dirt. For another, it has the most varied projects, including weaving efabric and wire-weaving. All of the projects looked attractive and interesting, with bright, vibrant, MODERN colors. The kindle edition has some obnoxious formatting flaws. The captions don't always seem linked to the picture. Also, the letters "st" are linked together. It bugged me every time I saw it, which was often, since you get sentences like: "HiSTorically, moST weavers twiST STarting at the left". It can be painful to read. If that kind of thing bugs you, I'd get the print version. The hyperlinks and reduced price make up for the deficits, in my eyes, but I hope they fix the eBook issues someday.
