Summer is all too short here in my little corner of the world, and I’m always a little sad when Labor Day weekend rolls around. Hmm…how to extend that summertime feeling just a little longer? Why, Mary Kay Andrews, of course! MKA is the Queen of beachy-summer reads and I can always count on her to bring a little southern charm and sunshine into my life, regardless of the season.This is the story of three women in their 30’s who have been best friends since childhood. Julia, Dorie and Ellis spend a “girls-only” month in the Outer Banks in a semi-dilapidated cottage owned by hunky Ty Bazemore. Everyone is at loose ends: Ellis has just lost her job (and a sizeable chunk of her identity), Dorie’s marriage is in crisis and Julia can’t commit to her long-time love. For his part Ty is in deep financial trouble and in imminent danger of losing the cottage to the bank. Add an enigmatic stranger that’s fleeing something – or someone – into the mix and you have the perfect recipe for a steamy August vacation at the beach.This was a cute story, but lacked the southern charm of the author’s other novels set in Savannah or Charleston. I do have to say that reading this book brought back a lot of fun memories of long ago beach vacations spent in ramshackle cottages that became “home” for a few short weeks. While the writing itself is good, there's a bit of a soap opera quality to the storyline, with the characters all caught up in various personal melodramas. At nearly 500 pages this book felt a bit too long to me; there’s just not enough story here to fill all those pages and there were times when I felt like the book just ran out of steam. Still, it was a pleasant read and I could practically smell the Coppertone and feel the sand in my flip-flops, and that’s really what I was looking for. I waffled between a 3 or 4 star rating for this one, but overall I enjoyed it so 4 stars it is!Occasional swearing/strong language and some brief adult content.

I've read a few of Andrews' other books and I love them! This book didn't disappoint. It had the right amount of relationship gooeyness and other twists and turns. I highly recommend this as a Summer read. I couldn't put it down and finished it in a matter of a few days.

Southern summers spent by the shore, any shire, is a gift all if it’s own. There’s just something about it that keeps me in Florida on any lake of river. These girls come back together like all best friends do, and it’s like they never skipped a beat. And they get some excitement thrown into the mix. The ending was a bit abrupt. That’s really my only issue.

For a Mary Kay Andrews book it took awhile to draw me into the story. There were lots of female characters and I kept wondering who would be take the lead. The story did has a sense of mystery and end up with a suspenseful ending. It was again a movie scene, and lots of designing of the beach house. Good read but not her best.

Dorie's sister Willa has begged her way into the vacation, but Ellis is determined not to let anything annoy her. She has arranged it all online, and of all the women, she is feeling very much in need of something she can control. She has just been "downsized" after a successful banking career, so her future looks uncertain.Arriving first, she is somewhat disappointed by how much the house needs a major overhaul, but decides to make the best of it. While waiting for her friends, she observes a man in the garage apartment next door...a hunky man. But she is determined to focus on the friendship connections.When the three friends gather together, they start off the month like a real girlfriend getaway. But all kinds of things happen over the next few days and weeks that turn things into so much more. A stray woman with secrets of her own manages to rent one of the rooms--after Dorie's sister Willa cancels out on them--and trying to ferret out this woman's secrets could turn everything into a completely different kind of event.Mix in some romance and girlfriend makeovers, and you have a fun page-turner. The thrilling ending has enough excitement to keep the reader turning pages.Despite these events, Summer Rental was a pleasant, somewhat predictable read in many ways. But the aforementioned elements kept it from being tired or stale, so I gave it four stars.

There are few things I enjoy reading more than a good chick lit book, and Summer Rental was just that.Ellis, Julia, and Dorie are three women in their mid 30s who have been best friends since grade school. They decide to rent a house on the Outer Banks for the month of August as a girls getaway. Throw in Ty, the good looking landlord, and Maryn, a woman on the run from her troubles, and there are twists and turns along the way.What I loved most about Summer Rental was it centered on a group of women in their 30s, not their 20s. As I enter that new decade, I love finding books with characters in that age bracket. It's a must read for a summer day or two at the beach or pool!

A most tiresome book by this author. I feel like she had to write it to fulfill contractual obligations.I have truly enjoyed her other books, including "Blue Christmas", which was really sappy. But this book, really, had the most sanitized, annoying characters ever. I just can't believe that these thirty something girls(they didn't act like women) could be so clueless. Yet they were.And the plot...all wrapped up neatly...no zip, no sparkle, no giggles, no suspense, contrived sex..brought on only continual naps by reading this at the beach...and at home.Sad to say, I would not recommend this book. I'd rather re-read all her others, they were good and the characters had real substance. And I missed those characters after finishing the books. I don't ever want to encounter this group again.

This review might not be useful for evaluating the book as something to read, but i figured this might be a decent forum to provide a review.The story is very well told. It's a captivating read. It's very surreal to read about your friends and former co-workers in a book like this. Most of us live our lives only ourselves. Having this book is kind of like having a well researched MTV Rock Documentary about our work, friendships, and time in our lives. I think if you interview enough people, look at what happened in any situation, it's easy to put a spin and story on things. None of us know the details of everybody else's life.I wish there'd been more discussion about the technical and models we pulled from to build twitter. Where the ideas came from and how they were put together. It's very weird to see how much focus there is on people's drinking, clothing, hygiene, and being broke. That we were pulling from txtmob, the unix finger command, carlton university's status update system, bike messenger dispatch, blogger, etc... that's not as sexy a story. That we considered how to look at transitions of mediums from desktop to web, from web to mobile, as a place to create new systems for communications in old ways, isn't as cool as intrigue amongst friends who ended up creating twitter. There's a lot of the people and not as much understanding twitter and it's context.The order of things as they happened and as they are told in the book isn't the same. This is ok, i think, mostly because the book is about telling the story of twitter's creation. It's no a strict chronology. Reordering things makes for a better story arc. There were a number of people not interviewed and i think their story was diminished. Some of us were talked about more because they fit a better story arc.One last thing, i'd say that Twitter's management problems were due to lack of ability to come together and make a decision, and not the anarchists refusing to follow rules and allow order.

Having lived and worked in and around Silicon Valley for most of my adult life, I have always felt that one of the most frustrating things about this still-amazing place is that it never seems content to just tell the world the truth about how technology is made.Building products--successful and unsuccessful ones alike--requires a lot of things: A solid idea, the right team to execute on it, and good timing, certainly, but on a more complicated note, personal connections, social capital, back-room deals, and, most of all, a whole hell of a lot of luck. Yet the stories that get told about Silicon Valley all too often gloss over all of this (and the power-grabbing and horse-trading that always accompany it) in favor of the much simpler and totally inaccurate narrative about the brilliance of "that one guy." The "founder." The "inventor." The one who made all the money and took all the fame. Never mind the other people who helped come up with it, the people who supported it, the people who contributed to it, the people who toiled away to make it a real thing. Nope: Just that guy. You know, the next Steve Jobs!Not so "Hatching Twitter." A lot of the reviews here have focused on how compelling Bilton tells this story, weaving the narrative of the tool's creation around some impressively researched details about a seemingly never-ending litany of back-stabbing. That's completely true, and the book's a worthwhile read for that alone. But to me, the most impressive thing about the book is how intently it works to dispel this standard myth of the lone creator, and how tirelessly his prose works to promote the truth, which is simply that making things is hard, and that it takes more than any one person to bring something as big and as important and as fundamental as Twitter seems to be into the world.I can only hope that the next wave of brilliant, motivated early-twenty-somethings who make their out to California to find their fortunes in the world of startups read this book and take away that message. That it sticks with them, and that they remember, no matter how successful they get, that it doesn't have to be all about them. That there's plenty of glory to go around. This stuff we do here is already impressive--there's no need to mythologize it, to hoard credit, to take away the accomplishments of others for no other reason than to promote a small, self-serving lie.And if they do, then maybe then they'll be able to treat each other better than the awful, inhumane way the Twitter team did.Maybe. I'm not holding my breath.
