With ingredients arranged by month and season, the book provides a glimpse into what's behind the joy of simple food. In January, post-mistletoe and champagne hoopla, Slater turns to inventive breads-and-soup pairings, like cider loaf and bacon with a celery root soup; March offers a stir-fry of greens and mushrooms; May arrives with a warm tart of crab and tarragon in creamy Dijon sauce; and autumn months feature leeks, roast pork, pumpkins, and recipes for the onslaught of zucchinis. Each month includes fruit-filled puddings and pies. Slater intersperses recipes with odes to herbs and garlic, descriptions of favorite kitchen tools, and entries relating his admiration for kitchen tables. Musings on his obsession with lemon and a poetical veneration of mashed potatoes will induce cravings in any reader. Recipes contain less-than-precise instruction, are informal in tone, and easy to execute. My first Nigel Slater cookbook...I think this is such a 'beefy', interesting,informative book! For those of us who LOVE cooking and interesting stories and really good and plentiful pictures and super recipes shown during the year from this lovely man. There are several of these 'note'books. From the Larder is wonderful, in my opinion. Even though Nigel is British...the recipes have been translated into American measurements! Howthoughtful! This is one of those cookbooks that you can sit and open to any page and read and enjoy! Looking forward to using his recipes.

This cookbook is as beautiful and readable as the recipes are delicious and easy to cook. Like all things Nigel, it makes a wonderful addition to anyone's cookbook collection. The recipes go month by month, so you can always create delicious dishes with whatever is freshest and in season. I would also recommend Nigel Slater's "Ripe: A Cook in the Orchard" for delicious recipes to made from fruit along with all the wonderful notes and anecdotes throughout the book. It will make you want your own orchard and gardens, too.

I feel like I'm on a first name basis with Mr Slater (Nigel) after reading his intimate musings and descriptions of days and meals. The recipes, with a few exceptions, are not pretentious and are easily accessible for US readers - even though many of us are not able to walk to local markets as he does. He ties in many of his days with what he does in his garden, which is a bonus for those of us who are gardeners and cooks.

Any book by Nigel Slater is guaranteed to improve your life, as his writing is not only soothing to read, but the recipes are easy, delicious and adaptable. I actually got this book at the library first and the same day ordered it because I needed to own it forever.

I felt conned as when I opened the cover it said and I quote "Originally published in Great Britain as the Kitchen Diaries" which I had already purchased. Returning books from China is a hassle!!

I love Nigel Slater's prose. It is beautiful and the recipes are scrumptious as well.Everything I have cooked from it has been delicious.

Not very far into the book but loving the casual tone of voice and the honest commentary. It truly is a cookbook you read as a novel -- or better yet as a personal glimpse into a journal.

Lovely insight into both a chef's thoughts about food and living in England as well.
