The title page says this is one volume of a six-volume collection of 101 stories, published in 1907 and edited by Julian Hawthorne. From the author dates I'm guessing this is volume 1.This collection contains 13 stories:The Necklace (Guy de Maupassant)The Miracle of Zobeide (Pierre Mille)The Torture of Hope (Villiers de L'Isle Adam)The Owl's Ear, The Invisible Eye, The Water of Death (Erckmann-Chatrain)Melmoth Reconciled, The Conscript (Balzac)Zadig the Babylonian (Voltaire)The Nail (Perdo de Alarcon)The Desposition (Luigi Capuana)The Adventure of the Three Robbers (Lucius Apuleius)Letter to Sura (Pliny the Younger)The kindle edition hase no active table of contents, no navigation at all. It is 3790 "locations" long. The formatting of the text itself seems okay, italics where italics belong, but sometimes it's not always easy to tell when a story ends and commentary for the next begins. The stories are mostly 18th- & 19th-century European. If you like that sort of stuff. They do not strike me as mystery stories I know. These seem story first, mystery second.

This would better be described as the "library of detective stories that were in the public domain that I could pull together in a self-published book." Best? World's Best? Please. This is a round-up of some rather obscure stories published in the 1800's (or earlier if you count Pliny and the Tibetan manuscript) that periodically turn up in, mostly, collections of horror fiction. "The Horla," for example, is generally considered a horror story, NOT a "detective" story. Most of these are French. Yes, Maupassant and Balzac are certainly "famous authors," but not what you think of first when looking for a cracking good detective yarn. If you really want a library of what most people would call "the world's best mystery and detective stories," look elsewhere.

Some good old classics, a lot of padding, but what else do you expect for a free book? The definition of "mystery and detective" stories is a little loose here.

The title is misleading. There is little mystery or detective work in these short stories that appear to have been translated from other languages, and have lost something in the translation.

Not very good at all. Definitely not what was expected. Far from worlds best mystery & detective stories. Disappointing. Do not recommend

Some good stories mixed with others that are just odd. Wide range. Seems to focus more on mystery than true detective stories.

Very good reading. It is refreshing to read author's of yesterday who suck you in with their own style of literary syntax. Most of the stories are easy to read but a few need to be read with a slower pace to soak in the meaning of what the author is trying to impart to his reader. Overall, this book is a must read.

This was a quirky collection. I enjoyed some of the stories a lot, some not so much. Most of the best stories were toward the end of the collection and included English-language translations of some French classics by authors such as Maupassant, Balzac, and Voltaire. Most of the stories were not really mysteries, I don't understand why this is called a book of mysteries and detective stories.
