I like this book very much and as I said earlier this is the first first-hand account of the action on wake Island. General Devereux had his time in captivity to interview the Marines that serve with them and get an accurate rendition of the battle. In my career in the Marine Corps I knew two men who served on wake Island in 1941 and 42. Their story coincides with general Devereux's story. Other articles and books I've read of the battle leave a great deal of controversy about who ordered the surrender of wake Island. Cmdr. Cunningham, the commanding officer of wake Island said in one account that he did not order the surrender. Devereux on the other hand said that he reported the situation to Cunningham and Cunningham "allegedly said" that 's we'd give it to them ," when he learned of the situation on the island after the Japanese had landed. I don't think anybody will really know the real story of who ordered the surrender of wake Island.
An excellent book, and the author does a great job of pulling the reader into the happenings of that amazing & gallant defense of US territory at the start of the Pacific War, just after the Dec. 7, 1941 attack of Pearl Harbor.It must be said that the description of how the Japanese treated the PW’s (we now say or write it as POW), was described, but not in great detail. What most of the Japanese did to, & the harshness of their abuse, is still difficult to read, at least for me. Despicable! However there was a very small minority that did what they could to help curb the abuse, so it is nice to read about those few men, who were indeed honorable men, in the truest & highest sense of the word.
The loss of Wake Island was a small part of the war in the Pacific. What is amazing is the losses inflicted on the Japanese during the attempts to capture the island. They lost over 5,000 sailors and soldiers. A number of ships were sunk and aircraft shot down.This all by a very small rag tag group with little resources and no support. The Japanese treated their captives miserably. German captives survival rate was twice that of the Japanese.An interesting bit of history lost to our current generation. I lived in Los Angeles as a child. My parents were terrified that the Japanese would invade through Long Beach, California. Now we all eat sushi and drive Hondas. A long time ago....
The book was well written, the author was factual insofar as his recollection of the action. The really puzzling fact that stood out was the lack of understanding between Navy and Marine Corps commanders as it related to decisions after the Japanese landings and the surrender of the island. Other books about the battle indicate both commanders, lacking adequate communications, led to some questionable decisions. An acquaintance of mine who was a survivor of the battle said that there was a feeling within the ranks that those task with command were spending most of their time in the command bunker rarely visiting defense positions.
It seemed to be a very complete story of the events on Wake Island during the war. A quite enjoyable record of all the events that took place on the Island during the first years of the War for someone who actually landed on the Island during the late 50's, and had admired the beauty of the island on a commercial plane leased to the Navy, and only has less than an hour to venture around. It seemed to be quite beautiful in a rather barren sense, but still something one couldn't forget, and would have loved to explore it further..
I enjoyed the book immensely as told by someone who lived through the whole ordeal of defending Wake Island, and finally being over run by a larger force. The Marines made the Japanese pay with their life while taking the Island. The prison life suffered by the marines was hard to read because it was so horrible. Great History.
By today's politically correct standards this book would be seen as racist. The author, when it was written, was still in the throes of his WWII perspective. The Japanese enemy, the "Japs", are seen in the light of the times.This book is a slice of the early war in the Pacific as definitely viewed by the winners. It's an interesting if somewhat skewed perspective. The bravery and behavior of "our guys" if accurately portrayed is noteworthy and praiseworthy. They went through a terrible ordeal.
Wonderful read about "the greatest generation" My father fought in the Pacific from December 1943 until September 1945. Obviously any war is hell but I think our troops in the pacific fought a far different enemy that found surrender intolerable. It's a damn shame history is not taught or is taught by revisionists that fail to honor what our troops accomplished. My father ended up on Harry S. Trumans presidential crew on the Sacred Cow and the Independence. He personally thanked the president for doing what needed to be done and keeping him and millions of others from becoming statistics.
