This beautiful book has been a long time coming! Finally, a comprehensively written record of some of the significant innovators of design in the Golden Age of the Automobile; female designers. Author, artist, photographer, designer, archivist, Constance Smith has done a remarkable job of bringing the lives and accomplishments of twenty of these women to our attention. With over four hundred color and black and white photos, illustrations and renderings, Smith has documented their contributions and shows us how they inspired and changed forever, auto design elements around the world.This book is the result of years of research, sorting out the myth from the reality. The author spent many hours interviewing the women designers, or their families in some cases, to find the real stories behind these careers. It is worthy to note, however, that only one designer out of these women stayed in the automotive industry long enough to make it a lifelong career, Suzanne E. Vanderbilt. The rest went on to other things, designing furniture, sculpture, teaching, industrial design, and anything else that used their specific talents and skills.With her own experience in the automobile industry, Smith has been able to bring elements of this book into delightful detail. When describing design criteria, interior detail, and exterior design, we have no doubt how it should look. That same experience and passion is evident in the auto photos that are so vibrantly exhibited. Many of the color images in the book were photos from Smith’s own camera. The images combined with the fascinating biographies of these unsung women of design, make for one of the best books on automobile design ever.

Bought as a gift and subsequently donated to the local high school art department which is populated with more than our pro rata share of award winning female artists. Hoping to inspire young ladies to see beyond the traditional two dimensional paper and canvas and apply their proven skills to the three dimensional arts.

It you want a book full of (mostly) instantly forgettable facts about these ladies, this is for you. I was disappointed with the choice of pictures and small size of the few good images. I would have preferred to see lovely images of more of the work that they did. I sent it back.

"Damsels in Design" is an expose of twenty trailblazing women behind many significant safety features. innovations, and styling of cars. Ms. Smith makes a valuable contribution to automotive history and women's studies with her extensive research and enthusiasm for the subject. This reference, rich with illustrations, is a must for any car aficionado's library.

Very interesting book.

I found Constance Smith’s Damsels in Design to be a very enjoyable and easy read, faithfully presenting each damsel, yet never losing each’s personal history or ambition as an individual. Ms. Smith’s selection of photographs and graphics well supports their design themes. I was particularly impressed by a simple sketch by Helene Pollins for a design exhibit and how much better it captured the essence of the exhibit than did the “as built” photo of the exhibit. Also impressive was the body of Suzanne Vanderbilt’s extensive leading work (and patents) in human factors, safety and especially child seating.I was fortunate to have known most of the original damsels, both as fellow industrial design students at Pratt Institute and as associates at GM Styling. One of the first things we were taught at Pratt was that being designers would change our lives, as everything we did in life, from here on, we would do as “designers.” Ms. Smith’s book does a great service in defining what that collective “design community” life would be like and it may assist young artists in deciding whether their creative “juices” will best be served as professionals within that design community.Norman J James Of Firebirds & Moonmen – Xlibris 2007

Y'all. I was SKEPTICAL of this book when I first purchased it. I am not catholic, nor do I know too much about the catholic religion. I bought it because 3 people recommended it to me and when 3 people recommend something you should probably do it. I honestly had to google some terms that most people would laugh at. A sacrament? I didn't know what that was. The Catechism? Nope. But that is besides the point.I have made some mistakes in my past relationships, I am nowhere near perfect but I was raised in a home that understands grace and understands how deeply the Father loves me. I (wrongly) expected this book to be condemning. I expected it to be judgmental and to turn me away from what it was saying. That is not what I experienced. I experienced an author coming from a place of love and boldness. An author without fear of pleasing people and a desire to break down the bible to it's very truths.This book is REAL. It's raw, it hits the tough stuff. This book challenged everything society has taught me and forever shaped the way I view sex and relationships. I started this book thinking "I want a marriage that makes me happy and NO I do NOT want kids" and I finished by praying the Lord would lead me to a relationship that is deeper than happiness, to a relationship that glorifies the Lord and I understand that, Lord willing, I will have children (and I will raise them to serve the Lord and to serve the people around them).I highly recommend this book to ANYONE and EVERYONE (married, single, divorced, walking off the path with the Lord, in high school, out of college...everyone) who is mature enough to discuss sex and relationships. Parents, read this with your teenage children. Discuss what it means, and be ready to have some tough conversations that will shape your child's future. I wish my parents had been willing to do that with me.

Wow. I wish this book had been available when I was in high school (78-82)! What grief it could have saved me and what joy and direction it may have given me... but enough “if only” talk.I am simply amazed by this book and the greater work which it is trying to explain. I tried a few times to assimilate parts of St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body but could not grasp it. Now that I’ve taken time to go through Christopher West’s book, the workbook and the DVD’s with some other folks at my Church, I can say that I’m ready to dig even deeper.But let me be clear: this work, introduction that it is, is mind blowing and beautiful and enough to chew on for weeks and perhaps years. Implementing the truths it reveals is a life long task.I take the challenge very seriously to bring this new evangelization to those who want to chat about it... and very few people I know refuse to talk about sex. In fact, many are hungry to talk about it in a meaningful way as our culture increasingly does the opposite. Being open and unafraid to converse on all these subjects is the gift that this book has given me. I assume that as I dig deeper into the actual text of Papa John, (St. John Paul II) I will be even more awestruck and less able to contain my enthusiasm. Looking forward to it all!!

However, although I myself is reformed theologian, I think Pope John Paul II provide great biblical insights on human sexuality which can provide us helpful thoughts on current sexual revolution movements of our time. It is really easy book to read as well so if you want to know Roman Catholic stand on human sexuality, you will gain good insights from it.

Every adult Catholic should read it to help them answer challenges to the Faith's doctrine.

I started reading the English translation for Theology of the Body (TOB) and the read was slow because of the complexity of the material. I then read a review suggesting to start with this book. I agree this is a great place to start.This book should be a MUST read for every high school student, every young couple, every couple who is just married (or about to be), and everyone else who just wants to understand WHY we are here and the purpose for sexual relations.It had made my return to TOB more understandable.

This is a clear, concise review of St. John Paul II's Theology of the Body. I'm too old to benefit on a practical level, but it's a must for anyone who takes marriage seriously, is living in a troubled marriage, plans to marry, or is influential on any of these categories. If you are not familiar with this work, you are in for a description of marriage more beautiful than I have words to describe. It also puts to rest generations of misunderstanding about what a woman's "submissiveness" to a husband means and does not mean. This clarification is, of course, long overdue. If this sounds good to you, you can also consult the former Pope's book Sex and Responsibility.

I am using this in a study group at Church. Chris West provides an easy to read commentary on the teachings and addresses of John Paul II and The Theology of the Body and the sexual revolution. Each chapter provides a great deal for reflection on love and sex and how we are destined to share in God's comm-union of love. It is powerful read on love and marriage and worthy for any couple preparing for marriage or those married for many years.

Disappointed with this compared with some of the other travel guides we have. We are planning on driving from Johannesburg and through the Drackensberg area to Durban, then down the Wild Coast and along the Garden Route to Cape Town. The Cape Town chapter looks good, but for so much of our route, the descriptions are mechanical and cursory. Many interesting places I've seen on TripAdvisor or in blogs are omitted or just brushed over. One expects guidebook authors to occasionally open up and dwell on the special places for a page or two, but there is little of that here. It is more of a catalog with almost everything distilled into short paragraphs, with little to inspire thoughts of "Oh, that might be fun." May be helpful as a reference book, but look elsewhere for something to get you excited.

Not great as the index is absolutely useless....skips some significant sites on any tourist's list! I needed to use this in conjunction with the Fodor's guide as neither have adequate indexes, nor do they cover everything. This could be much better!

Of little use in a recent trip. Info is hard to find, major sites are missing, very disappointing on the trip. Somewhat interesting before the trip.

Rather more information than I need so hard to wade through. I am only going to one area in South Africa so it a bit of an overkill for me. I did get the Lonely Planet Brazil in the past but I was traveling all over Brazil so that worked for me.

The information was current and useful. I think the wildlife section was a bit lacking, given that South Africa is such a destination for wildlife viewing - several of the pictures listed were also missing.

Any CEO who doesn't read this is missing critical information about what to expect from a sales manager and/or what to look for when hiring a new one.OK, the beginning of the book may give you an idea that this is a self-promotion but those of you that couldn't get past that are missing out on great content. The book is invaluable for anyone playing a role in a sales organization. Rosen offers sales coaches a fresh, clear, no-nonsense strategy for successful coaching. If I were Rosen, I'd give the book away for free and instead take a percentage of sales increases that will undoubtedly come from his advice. If only.

Keith does a great job of creating systems and methods for coaching your T.E.A.M. - He does a great job separating coaching from accountability. There are some great resources in this book if you order it in print form. I ordered it in audio but the folks at Keith's office were helpful in getting me a hard copy of a couple of forms.

Recommended to me by my Director. The book is a good read and if you have been in sales for any length of time, you will recognize all of the different sales managers in the book. It will make you think about your style and how to find your strengths and help your folks to develop into the champions that you see in them in the interview process. If you don't find something useful in this book, maybe you are in the wrong profession. It is also a guide for manager that want to develop their directors and VP into better sales people. If you sell for a living, either as a sales professional, Sales Manager, Director, or VP, this book should be on your bookshelf. You will find yourself going back to it again and again.

Best book ever on sales coaching! I have purchased this book at least 20 times because I love it so much I gift it away to people who seek me out about my best practices. It changed my life personally and professionally, I have not had turnover and our sales keep increasing since I invested in this book and began executing coaching the way Keith talks about in the book. Read a review above that the book gives you no structure, NOT true, it is all structure but maybe that reader missed the part that the structure comes from the inside first. I also enjoy listening to it in my car, it is available on audible and ITunes. BEST SALES COAHING BOOK EVER!

I am very disappointed with the book. Just a few ideas are given here and then repeated and repeated and repeated. The authors give very simplified and basic instructions about guide training in a way that can be useful only for schoolteachers in remote areas of Africa.For instance, they suggest a procedure, which begins with the following operation: "Begin the session with an open discussion. Ask the class: What is material culture? If the class know what it is, ask them to name examples of material culture, both generally and at the site. If they are not familiar with the term (?!?), give a quick accurate definition: material culture is anything shaped by human hands".An another example is the authors' suggestion to trainers about how to prepare their class on "Identifying the Site's Topics". They say: "Assemble materials. Flip chart pages developed during Activity 2.1 (tape to walls or make available for people to see). Easel, flip chart, and markers of at least four colors." For God's sake, it's about the guide training for conducting historical tours and not about kindergarten activities!The whole text of approx. 150 pages twirls around a basic idea that 'a great tour' is based on several elements such as storylines, themes, physical evidence, biography of historic personalities and historical context. How to pull it all together is probably a scheduled purpose of the book, but I'm afraid that its authors missed their aim.

Perfect for what I needed.

This is a wonderful book when used properly. The book is to be used as a training guide for a class or workshop. The book is set up to work out specific excercises for a mock historical site. I took such a workshop through the National Trust in which this book was used. We followed along with the instructor (who used slides, charts, and yes, colored markers--see review below)working in team groups. It has been a valuable reference to refer back to. Even if you do not get to take the workshop put on by the National Trust you could adopt the book to conduct a workshop in your own organization. It empahsizes using historical materials and research available to you to create inclusive narratives based on facts and verifiable, giving authority to your exhibits, rather than leaving visitors with mistruths and misconceptions.

This is another one that I think is very important to the field of Public History. If you have to get it for class, you'll love it. If you want it to learn, you'll love it.

The government lied to the public about most of what happened - about who fired the first shots, about drug allegations, about child abuse. The FBI was duplicitous and negligent in gassing Mt. Carmel - and that alone could have started the fire that killed seventy-six people. Drawing on interviews with survivors of Koresh's movement (which dates back to 1935, long before Koresh was born), on published accounts, on trial transcripts, on esoteric religious tracts and audiotapes that tell us who Koresh was and why people followed him, and most of all on secret documents that the government has not released to the public yet, Reavis has uncovered the real story from beginning to end, including the trial that followed.

I was pleased with 'The Ashes of Waco.'The book is, first, well-written for one of its type, with a good, straightforward narrative that doesn't get in the way of the facts (and isn't without some cheeky wit every now and then). The text is based on comprehensive research, and the author's analyses are reasonably objective, with no detectable bias toward either "side" of the Waco affair. As far as substance, 'Ashes' shines, not only for providing a sound and insightful account of the events, but also their circumstances and context, including an impressive outline of the Branch Davidian doctrine, as to provide a glimpse into the basic psychology and reasoning of its adherents. Additionally, the book presents a classic study of "worlds colliding," in which two groups, and their individual, subjective realities, clash, with lethal results. By showcasing the respective perceptions of each side of the conflict, and the stark contrasts in each, 'Ashes' exposes the deeper, psychological causes at play, as well as the unsavory motives and distorted thinking that were operative throughout (again on both "sides," and near-equally). As best as I can judge from the facts as presented in this book, neither side is, in the end, revealed to be "right," with each, instead, being equally under the influence of broken logic, mental tunnel-vision, and biased perception -- "shades of grey" made flesh, as it were.From the example set forth by the Waco incident and its many actors, we can all learn a thing or two, I think. Thus, we see the true value of books such as 'The Ashes of Waco': in some small way, they might help to prevent future repetitions of violence, if only we can absorb their lessons and put them into practice.My thanks goes out to this book's author, subjects, and publisher. This was written shortly after the events, so it's not perfectly up to date with more recent commissions, congressional hearings, and US Supreme Court decisions. Nevertheless, I'd still recommend it for one-stop shopping if you want to understand what happened at Waco, especially if you're interested in a basic understanding of the Davidians' beliefs.

Before reading this book, all I had to go off of was media reports about what happened in Waco, Texas. After reading this book, I know I have a better understanding about what really happened, but what the people at Mt. Carmel actually believed in, and how their religious beliefs all started. The book is a little heavy on the religion side, as far as explaining what the Branch Davidians believed in, and why, and how it came to be, but the author does a great job of using this to explain what happened. Just a little FYI if you don't want to read a lot about religion. But overall, a great book, and a very good read about the truth about what happened.

Great read, interesting facts about this event

This book was one of several that I have read on the topic of the attack on the Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas. The author does a good job of telling the story and pointing out the discrepancies between what the Goverment says VS what really happened. My only complaint were the several detours into Davidian beliefs and views of their impending deaths at the hands of the Government. While all of this surely played a crucial role, the book devotes too many pages to religious beliefs instead of more detailed information about the actual assault and murders committed by the US Government.

Having read many books and articles about the Waco tragedy for research in both college and graduate school, I have found that this is perhaps the most invaluable of them all. Reavis provides probably the most comprehensive description of the tragedy and the events surrounding it. I would recommend this to anyone who wants or needs to understand what happened. There are lots of other sources that go into more detail about particular aspects of Waco (such as the religious dimensions, public policy concerns, etc.) but Reavis does the best job of explaining Waco from a historical/journalistic perspective.Highly recommended.

An excellent read that was well researched. I found this to be the second best book I've read so far on the subject. I recommend "The Davidian Massacre" by Carol Moore as a companion read to this one.

I've read most of Jane Green's novels and while I really love her early work, I have more mixed feelings about her most recent books.FALLEN starts as a more straightforward romance than other recent Green books. Emma, an English ex-pat who has left the world of banking for a simpler life in the suburbs, meets local boy Dominic when she rents a run-down house near the beach from him. The two quickly — basically, immediately -- fall in love, and complications ensue with Dominic’s six-year-old son, Jesse.As one of me least favorite things, in literature AND real life, is adults blaming children for romantic problems, I struggled with this one. A six-year-old not getting on board with your instantly jumping into his dad’s bed for nightly sleepovers doesn’t, “have too much power,” as stated here, instead he’s confused and emotionally upset … All totally normal reactions. And a father putting his child’s best interests and emotional well being ahead of his new girlfriend’s isn’t being, “manipulated,” by his son, he’s being, well, a father. And since the child here is a gonna-be-kindergartener, it’s kind of hard to feel like the women in her mid-30s he just found naked in his dad’s bed is the one being mistreated in this equation. Just because you made him pancakes and adopted a kitten, doesn’t mean the kid can’t be emotionally confused and scared about his dad jumping into a new relationship.There was also a LOT of focus on Emma’s effortless transition from banker to sought-after interior designer. She gets jobs by redesigning a single room in her rental — and, first off, who renovates a house they’re RENTING, which was Emma’s plan from page one?Any who, Emma's supposed design niche is that she is “affordable,” which Green seems to define by shopping for tchotchkes at Home Goods, which is name-checked repeatedly. And, hey, I’m a huge Home Goods fan, and actually really enjoy design, but hiring an interior designer isn’t something that most middle class people I’ve ever known do, especially not the upstate townies who are clamoring to be Emma’s clients in a totally unrealistic fashion. In my world, shopping at Pier One, et al, together is called asking a girlfriend’s opinion, and it’s usually an unpaid position. Also, frankly, Emma’s design sense doesn’t sound so awesome, based on her extensive, and exclusive, use of sisal rugs and Buddha statues, in every room Green painstakingly describes. (Also, Emma, I hate to break it to you, but sisal rugs + kittens is not a winning combo. If you weren't fictional, you'd know that.)And then with only about 20 pages to go, the love story takes a sharp left into a tragedy that feels, frankly, tacked on and a wildly unearned plot twist that read to me like a, 'Huh, I gotta wrap this up somehow,' move from the author.In the end, even with the big reveal, there’s just not much here. Dominic and Emma’s "one true love" (that even the book admits is less than 6 months old, so maybe save the sanctimonious relationship advice?) is never in any real jeopardy via the nonsense obstacles Green half-heartedly places in their path, and the author seemed to put way more thought into Restoration Hardware sofas, than character development or plotting, given the sudden, and totally unearned, shift in tone. Since I never really liked, or believed, any of the characters, I didn't get emotional about their outcomes.All in all, this starts out an easy, breezy, often eye-rollingly-silly, read that tries to morph into something deeper, but fails on both fronts.

WOW- what a disappointment!! I am such a Jane Green fan- read all her books and was really looking forward to this one. Honestly- it was flat, dull and boring and I struggle through reading it - then to top it off the ending was just terrible. Just did not like this book at all. Normally she writes page turners but this was an effort to read -told by one character and not very interesting. I am hoping her next book is better!

This book was a bit of a clunker. It took me a couple of months to get through it because I just couldn't get interested. There was no intrigue, no real plot except for a romance, no real story until the last 20 pages. I found myself skipping long passages, because there was just no point of them in the storyEmma is an immature person. When her boyfriend gets quiet one night after being surprised by something, she goes of the deep end into despair like a 13 year old would, not middle aged woman.Unlike most people, I found the last 20 pages to be the best because something actually happened. But overall, this was a very dull book.

I am a big fan of Jane Green and have read and enjoyed almost all of her books.This book was however a big disappointment.The characters were not well developed (as they are in most of her books) they were one dimensional stereotypes.The story was flat and very predictable.I wish I had waited for the reviews to come out before purchasing this book hot off the press.Hopefully her next book will be a great one like all the rest have been.

I have always been a huge Jane Green fan, and this one was a real disappointment for me. For starters, I think that because the story was told in the 3rd person rather than the 1st person, it made it much harder to believe the love story and the romantic connection between Emma and Dominic. Had the book been told in Emma's voice (or alternatively in both of their voices), it may have helped make their story more believable. They came across like two really good friends to me- which I know was part of the point, I just didn't buy into the romance that developed between them. There were a number of times where the story simply said that they "talked and talked..." Wouldn't it have been better if the reader was actually part of these chats?Additionally, there were a couple inconsistencies in the story that I'm really surprised an editor didn't catch. Also, although I generally enjoy Jane Green's descriptive style, the decorating and food descriptions in the book went on and on and got a bit repetitive and almost annoying at points- sisal rugs were mentioned 7 times!I'm still trying to digest the ending (and don't want to spoil anything). I guess there needed to be some sort of twist so this wasn't just a run-of-the-mill romance solely about opposites attracting and defying the odds of coming from different backgrounds. The strange and abrupt ending was just one of the many reasons I couldn't love this book like I have Jane Green's others.

I've read all of Jane Green's books and really enjoyed them all, some more than others, but I did not like this one. The story line was slow and the characters seemed very one dimensional. The main character did not speak to me at all, half of the book seemed to be her conflicted about dating someone "not in her class" which doesn't even seem to be a real issue in 2016! The love story was predictable and a bit boring, I kept waiting for a good plot twist like in her other books. The ending seemed tacked on and kind of lazy, like she just was done writing the book but had to think of something to end it. Very disappointed overall. Enjoyed Saving Grace a lot more.

I was very disappointed in this book. I usually like Ms Green's books, but this seemed a little juvenile. There were a few phrases that she used repeatedly throughout the book and it was very distracting. I wish she had cut back on them or at least bought a new Thesaurus.

I have no idea where the ending came from.... Very odd. Borrow from the library - it is not worth the $13.99

I read this aloud with my 8th graders (we had also read the previous book together)--they loved both books. The teenage characters still have lots of growing up to do and they do it the hard way here without any sexual scenes that can make it hard for a classroom teacher to present in class. Keep in mind that it's a long read, but by the time we reached the last two chapters, most of the kids were too emotionally involved to be able to read aloud, so I had to take on that task myself. Our dean of students walked in as we were reading on the last day and was mystified to see half a dozen kids sobbing openly while others had tears running down their faces. Don't let the tearful ending put you off, though; there's plenty of zombie attacks and bad guys to be overcome. Dust & Decay is far more introspective than its precursor, though, and my students are clamoring for book #3.

Unwilling heroes are probably my favorite characters. They don't want the fame and honor of being people's heroes, but people naturally trust them, look up to them, and expect to be led by them. Tom Imura is that kind of man. He is the bounty hunter who has kept the peace in the Rot and Ruin, even though he wasn't trying. His very presence made people behave and stopped the lawlessness. But when he packs up to leave, people get worried. Death and Decay is Jonathan Maberry's amazing portrayal of an unwilling hero and the people who would put their lives in his hands.Benny Imura used to resent his brother for abandoning their parents on the First Night, the night the dead began to walk again. When he found out his parents were actually infected and Tom saved him, it made him see Tom in a new light. Then when Tom saved his best friend, Nix, and put an end to Gameland- the place where evil men kidnap kids and have gladiator-esque fights between them and zombies- Benny knew Tom was a man to look up to. Now, after seeing a jet fly above them, Tom is determined to leave the Rot and Ruin to find the jet and secure a better life with his brother and their motley crew of friends.Despite training them, not all are ready to leave Sanctuary. Nix, after seeing her mother murdered by an evil bounty hunter and being thrown in Gameland, is ready to go. So is Lilah, the mythical Lost Girl who lived in the Rot and Ruin and turned out to not be such a myth after all. But Benny, Chong and Morgie aren't so sure. Morgie decides to stay home, and Chong's mother finally agrees to let him go as long as it is only for a few nights and he comes right back instead of going on the full journey. Unfortunately, she couldn't have known the trouble brewing in the Rot and Ruin.The trip is immediately off on the wrong foot as strange things start to happen. They come across some weird characters, a man who was executed by way of zombie, and the monk and sisters at their first stop are missing. When Chong disappears, Tom goes to find him and leaves Benny, Nix and Lilah to wait for them to return. What he couldn't have known was that things have gotten very dangerous out there and someone doesn't want them to make it out of town. When thousands of zombies overrun the building they are hiding in, Nix, Benny, Lilah barely make it out alive, but they are separated. Now everyone is trying to make it to the next stop- the old hotel and trading post- alive. What they don't know is there are lots of people out there looking for them- some to warn them and some to kill or kidnap them. Can they find each other without falling prey to the zombies... or worse?This was a phenomenal follow-up to the first book. I simply could not get enough of this story and stayed up way past my bedtime reading it. I absolutely love the characters, all of them. The good characters make you want to scream every time they are in danger and the bad characters make you want to find a sword and take them on yourself. The story is exciting and non-stop action. There are even some unexpected twists that I won't ruin for you, but I will hint that one involves a very surprising animal.The writing is appropriate for a wide range of ages with no sexual content or inappropriate language. There is a good deal of violence, as one would expect in any zombie story, but it isn't overdone and it isn't the focus of the story- the characters are. I have read Maberry's adult fiction as well, and he tends to follow the same rules- the characters are your biggest investment, not the gore. He wants you to love them or hate them, but either way, you are invested in their lives. The other stuff is just icing on the cake. So even though the premise is violent, the story isn't too much so. Bring the Rot and Ruin into your life and you will never be the same... even if it means you are now a zombie!

Six months have passed since the destruction of Gameland, the deaths of the Motor City Hammer and Charlie Pinkeye, and the jet sighting. Benny Imura, Lou Chong, and especially Nix Riley are still reeling from these events and have changed so much because of them. Benny, Nix, and Benny's brother Tom decide to leave town in search of the jet after months of grueling training led by Tom. They decide to leave their town in search of the plane and aren't planning to come back. So they, plus Lou Chong, set out into the Ruin where everything goes wrong. They are attacked by wild animals, zombies, and crazy people. Plus Charlie Pinkeye may still be alive. The group gets split apart and have to face danger on their own or die.I immensely enjoyed Rot and Ruin last year, but I was a little wary of its sequel because it could fall into the second book pitfall (where it just sets up for the next book) or just wouldn't be as good. Dust and Decay proved to be even better than Rot and Ruin. The character development and twists and turns are much better and more involved. Benny Imura grew out of being incredibly whiny and immature in the last book, but he still has a lot of growing to do. Dealing with the very harsh realities outside his town makes him realize what's important. Nix is much different. Her mother's death left her more somber and depressed than before and very eager to leave her home town forever. I really enjoyed her journal entries interspersed between chapters throughout the novel. They gave a lot of insight into her character and enlightened us about the science behind the zombies. Lilah has been one of the most consistently strong and stoic characters, but she breaks down and shows a softer side of herself. She has to come to terms with that fact that she can lose the people she cares about after not having anyone for so long. My favorite was the insight into Tom's character and how he did things to perpetuate love instead of hatred. He would examine his feelings to make sure he was in the right frame of mind and would give his all to protect those he loves and what is right.Dust and Decay covers a lot of new territory. The Ruin is much more wild and dangerous than Benny ever saw. It's home to wild animals (even a rhino!) and zombies as well as bounty hunters and some very unsavory people. Every time these characters think they are safe, something else dangerous comes up that they have to deal with. The action is practically nonstop. Many new characters are introduced. The new villain is incredibly creepy on many different levels. He makes my skin crawl. Many of the bounty hunters from Benny's trading cards are introduced as well. My favorite of them are J-Dog and Dr. Skillz, who are cheerful with their obsolete surfer dude slang and laid back attitudes despite seeing horrible things and living in the wild.Jonathan Maberry's strength is creating characters that I cared about and that were incredibly realistic. I could read about these characters all day and I found myself longing to read the book when I was busy. I am so happy Flesh and Bone comes out this month because I don't think I could have waited months for the next book.
