I initially borrowed this book through my Kindle Unlimited account. Then, shortly after reading the first half, I decided this is packed so full of essential information, that I just had to purchase it outright so I can refer to it when needed. The information within Box Turtles may have come to my notice just in time to save my baby turtle's life.Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first? Yes, although the author has written other titles about box turtles and various pond turtles he has raised during the past 40 years.Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? Unfortunately, there are more, albeit minor, editing errors than other books on the topic. Yet, in terms of thoroughness and research, this is the most useful book on box turtles that I have come across.Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read? Although it can be read in a leisurely fashion, this is more of a hands-on guide than it is a quick, easy read. I note that in a positive manner, because it is quite thorough and includes a good number of terrific color photographs.What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? Plain English. No profanities. Suitable for readers of all ages.My biggest pleasure was a toss-up between the thoroughness of the content and the quality of the included photographs and illustrations. The author has provided information that I was surprised to learn. As a result, my newly-acquired baby three-toed box turtle has a better shot of survival than it would have if I had stuck to the instructions provided to me by the pet shop employee where I bought it.In addition, the author’s sincere love for reptiles is exhibited by his decision to include his email address so readers can consult him with any questions or concerns.I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.EXCERPTIn other words, if you supply your Box Turtle with foods it does not want to eat and/ or you have its environment’s temperatures at the incorrect temperature, then your pet turtle will not eat properly. And, for that matter it may come to the point that it will totally shut down and not eat at all. It will then slowly get weaker until death occurs. And, that is why you purchased this book so this will never happen.If your Box Turtle has a good appetite and all of a sudden does not want to eat, this could very well be a sign there is a health problem.I have found that turtles that have been caught in the wild will quite often have a hard time at first to adapt to its new controlled environment. There are many reasons that this can occur; changes in its original environment, stress of captivity or even removal from its foraging environment. Also, I have found that turtles that are purchased from quality pet stores will often have a hard time adapting to its new home. The key to making the transition is to make it as close to the environment that it came from.For example, if you found a Yucatan Box Turtle that came from Yucatan, Mexico, then you need to have the heat and the types of food it has been eating to be about the same as to where it came from. Make Sense?Here are some things you can do if your Box Turtle refuses to eat. If your turtle’s habitat is outside you can try feeding it during the late morning hours as this will allow your turtle’s body heat to warm up. This is especially true during the spring and fall. If the temperature drops below 65 degrees at night it will take the turtle time to warm up from the morning sun. Remember, Box Turtle and for that matter, any turtle, will not feed if its body is too cold.Cold turtles can’t digest food properly; therefore when setting up an outdoor environment, the right location is very important for maintaining your turtle’s body heat. The correct temperature is vital for your turtle to have a good appetite; if its set-up is facing the east then it will get the morning sun providing something does not block the sun rays. But if it’s on facing the west, it may not get any sun rays until later in the day. The correct location also applies to how hot it will get. To high of heat can also cause your turtle to slow down its movement which can equal how much it will fill like eating. But, with the higher heat you can control this by adding things such as brush inside its enclosure to give it shady spots.West and north facing enclosures are not ideal for controlling temperatures.Turtles can overheat very fast, and, if this happens, its desire to eat will have the same affects as being too cold. So whether for either an outdoor or indoor habitat, the temperature is crucial to its survival. You need to give your turtle the right set-up for it to want to eat. If there is a lot of sun shinning on its habitat, then you need to add some type of shade. You can do this by adding some branches or any other type of structure for adding shade and will stop the suns rays.Even a stack of rocks or bricks (secured so they don’t fall on your turtle) that are shaped like an L will provide a shady, secure area for your turtle to feed. If you build a stack of rocks, they best way is to find rocks that are flat on one side and then take silicone caulking and glue them to other rocks that are flat on one side. This will help them from falling and possible hurting your turtle.Seldom will you find a Box Turtle that will want to eat everything that you offer it. You will need to experiment to find out what it will eat. The best way is to try feeding it different things. DON’T flood it with all types of foods as all this will do is cause a lot of the food to go to waist. The best method is to give it just two different types of food at one serving. Just leave it for a day and see if it will eat it. If it does then great, write down what it liked and then try other foods. Just keep doing this until you eliminate what it wants and does not want.Once you have found what meals it likes to eat then you can add vegetation to it. Remember, 60% meat and 40% vegetation. Say for example your pet turtle is going wild for earthworms. Then I would chop it up into smaller pieces and then add grated cantaloupe with yellow squash. Or even a meal of worms and chopped collard greens and strawberries. If needed, you can even add minerals or vitamins to this meal for even more nutriments.If you own several Box Turtles and they are all in the same enclosure you will most likely have one that is or thinks it is the boss. The problem with the bossy type of turtle (or human for that matter) is it will probably want to eat more food than its share. Meaning the other turtles will have to unwillingly share. That is why you don’t feed more than one turtle from the same container. You will need to feed each turtle from their own feeding container AND you will need to separate them from each other as this will make it harder for the “boss†to be able to eat the other’s food.Don’t feed from paper plates or other similar products as their food will stick to it and the moister will cause the paper to come off and stick to the food which therefore might be eaten by your turtle. I find plates made from metal to be the best. Plus, the hard metal will help their beak to be kept filled down when they peck at their food. If you let live insects in your turtle’s environment your turtle will love this as they really like to hunt their foods. This will also keep their brain from getting board plus it their hunting will give them exercise. If you have several turtles together, then you will notice that some of them are better hunters. I would encourage the author to seek a professional editor but, if that is not feasible, I would volunteer to substitute for a more qualified editor. Why? I want to do whatever I can to prevent heartbreak and disaster for other box turtle keepers, and their pets.
