Many years ago when I first learned of Dr. Pagel's husband death, I was at the time a subscriber to the Sciences magazine and his obituary was part of an editorial, I thought to my self, bad things do happen to good people. As I read this book, Why Religion? I became more and more intrigued by the continual questioning of personal misfortunes by the author. Through it all—the frightening aspect of being the sole provider, becoming accustom to loneliness, and the slow passing of time, became too real to this reader. Afterward, I stood and questioned my beliefs in good and evil and what those concepts meant to me. I could not put down the book as I was drawn into Dr. Pagel's narrative and wanted to know the end result. But like a cushioned landing I was let down gently and walked away knowing all humans share the same questions. At the end, I immediately remembered the Pilgrims Mass at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compestla, Spain and that part of the mass where the expression of peace is shared by the attendees...suddenly, the words, "May peace be with you," are expressed in Spanish, French, Portualgese, German, Japanese, Italian, so many other languages but all conveying the same sentiment. I feel enlighten by the book and the fact that humans believe in hope and in a better tomorrow. Thank you, Dr. Pagel for sharing.

I logged onto my Amazon account to purchase this book - but find that the ebook for the Kindle (my preferred format) is more expensive than the hardback copy! That makes no sense to me and I won't support the illogic of the pricing structure.

The first half of the book tells the story of the death of her son and then her husband. As horrid as this story was and is, it was not what I expected. Just as I was growing weary (?) of this terrible sequence of events and its effect on her, she layers on the texture provided by the Bible and the Gnostic Gospels and the entire story begins to fall in place. This book is different than her other books. I am a loyal fan and, in the end, this book added knowledge and perspective. The answers to our questions may lie, in part, in ourselves. And finally, Fr. Barbour, faith is a gift.

There is reading a book, and there is drinking up a book as if you are unexpectedly thirsty for precisely its taste, for what it is. This is a drinking book. It offers much to readers who have been moved by Dr. Pagels' previous works, to those who have found their way independently to the Gnostic Gospels, to any for whom the question "Why Religion?" is vivid. In a time when there is so much idiocy, this book represents the height of intelligence, not only of mind but of heart.

Religious scholar Elaine Pagels memoir about her life including how she was personally brought to religious faith after the death of her 6 year old son and, the following year, the death of her husband famous physicist Heinz Pagels in a mountaineering accident. Extremely honest, raw and ultimately uplifting, a beautifully written book about surviving the worst life can dish out. Highly recommend.

In asking universal questions about suffering and weaving in her quest for meaning, Dr. Pagel shows us a way to understand the imponderables of life. A must read for anyone who cannot find the answers in dogmatic religion—and for anyone dealing with grief. As poetic and impactful as Joan Didion’s Year of Magical Thinking, but perhaps with more hope. It moved me to tears, and I could not put it down!

Brilliantly written, without dogma, exposition of why religion persists in the face of the onslaught of rational thinking. Dr Pagels includes the story of her own terrible personal losses to illustrate her need for finding some deeper meaning in life thru her research on Christianity. I found this book when I was most in need of it.

I have read most all of Elaine Pagel's works and they along with Joseph Campbell's works (especially Tho Art That) have aided me on a journey to seek the truth of my being. Here she bares her soul to the breaking point and through it al comes out the other side with grace and dignity.The only downgrade is when Ms. Pagels becomes somewhat political in the last chapter. One quick example is stating President Bush wanted to wage a war on Muslims. To be fair he stated he would protect us from Radical Muslim terrorists wherever they resided. Outside of that minor quibble I thoroughly enjoyed her latest book as I have her other's works.FR Bailey

I would say that most of the book is actually given over to spiritual life and practice. This says a lot about Ms. Gamber's and the Church's orientation. She lays out and incorporates into her discussion the spiritual analysis of the Jesuit Father Bernard Lonergan --- that is, the ways of examining events, experience, and so forth; making productive spiritual conclusions about them; and moving on with the hope of spiritual transformation. Ms. Gamber discusses briefly, but really nicely, the search for personal calling and a variety of methods of starting out on prayer and continuing in the routine of prayer. She discusses worship and ministry in the context of the Church's Baptismal Covenant. She has a nice discussion on the Eucharist and the Prayer Book ritual(s) for it.Ms. Gamber's emphasis is upon thought and growth, not just on doctrine and ritual. Nonetheless,in the midst of all this, she also finds the time to tell us what a "paten" is and makes us familiar with "chasubles", "cottas" and incense (!). She also talks about the Church's institutional structure.A really nice book for the cradle Episcopalian, the new Episcopalian, or for anyone wanting to learn about this beautiful Church.

Great read if you are wanting to learn more about the Episcopal Church and beliefs. The author goes in some detail regarding their worship and sacraments.

Excellent Resource! This is a well written, in depth book that is easy to read, and a joy to have at hand. As an Episcopalian that was searching for a comprehensive look at all aspects of our Church, I was glad to have found this resource. It will, no doubt, come in handy in the third year of our Education for Ministry class when we study the Church and its' history, as well as stand as a gift for those who are searching for that "Welcoming" Church.

This is a really good book to read if you want to know more about the Episcopal Church! I'm currently going through Confirmation classes and it's a big help to have around (also, we're using it to study from)! Highly recommend it. There's also a teen edition!

Jennifer Gamber has assembled an excellent introduction to the Episcopal Church in a fashion that is readily understood by most age groups. I've used this for my confirmation class and will use it in the future.

To know the Episcopal Church is to love it. If one is new to the Denomination YFYL is book is a must. If you're a lifelong or somewhere in between member, you too will want this book in your Library. If your checking out churches read the book and find a pew !

Very interesting read. would encourage newbies and oldies of the Episcopal faith to keep this book on their used frequently shelf.

Les Rowntree is a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, where he researches and writes about environmental issues. This career change comes after three decades of teaching both Geography and Environmental Studies at San Jose State University in California. William Wyckoff is a geographer in the Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University specializing in the cultural and historical geography of North America. I must say after two college degrees, this is one of the best books I've had in any course. It was very informational and up to date with current topics of interest. I learned a lot about the world. The title seems boring, thought I would hate the class but nope, turned out to be one of my favorites simply because of this book. My only complaint is the price but that is typical of textbooks. This one actually has a reason to stay updated and current since it deals with the world in general including the environment, civil rights, economics, war, rebels, etc. If you have a course utilizing this book, consider yourself lucky that you are not taking a boring class!

It is a text book and I have not completed the course as yet.

I used this book for my regional geography class...it was in good condition and it was cheap renting it, rather than buying it new.

World for geography 1300! Came right out time, had no problems what so ever. I'm sorry if you need this book for your class, GOOD LUCK ITS BORING.

Book came in the mail in a short amount of time and the quality was as stated in the description. The book got me through the course with ease. No missing pages and few markings in the book.

I really love the fact that each is a short account of the item being told and so easy to read a bit at a time. If I have only a few minutes, I can still read something entertaining and interesting. It is great for young teens, teens and adults alike.

I bought this for my husband who is Presidential scholar with a library or over 500 books on our Presidents. And he loves it and is learning new and interesting fun facts!

Every story is a surprise. It is great for young and old. The writing is very agile. There are several stories that give an entirely new view of President Lincoln. Never knew that he obtained a U.S. Patent for the design of a flotation device for boats that get stuck on sandbanks.The stories are great for reading to kids before bed. Each story is one page long and the facing page has details and facts that give added color to the times surrounding the presidential tale being described.

This is just another example of how well Kit Morgan can weave together a fun, witty, adventurous, romance and make it so you just can’t put it down.The story is one that starts in Clear Creek, OR a town of whacky, fun, and crazy characters that reader just wants more of.But the story heads out to the White’s stagecoach stop where Oscar White brings his bride to meet the family and help out at the busy stop.Lily is from South Carolina where she fled after the Civil War when her husband is killed in action and their plantation is burnt to the ground with her mother in law and Lily inside. Her mother in law dies and Lily must go to live with an aunt in Denver. When her aunt dies, Lily is broke, homeless and has hardly any domestic skills, but needs help and the only way she can think of is becoming a mail order bride. The agency sets her up to go to Clear Creek to meet her perfect match.When she arrives by stagecoach and sees this really big man waiting for her she may not be so sure about this. But what can she do but marry him.Oscar thinks Lily Fair which he keeps calling her, is the most beautiful woman he has ever laid eyes on. The town folk who she meets at tea in the fancy Hotel in this small town decide to come along with others to join in their wedding. Well it’s what they do even if you may not want them all there.Once they get back to the stagecoach stop she is enfolded into a family that has seen better times also.She however has a secret she is afraid once her new husband hears about she will be put back on the next stage.Adventure, fun, truths, humbleness, romance and love, and faith all come together along with some whacky characters who you are so glad to catch up with because it’s just plain a riot there. I love this story as I have all her stories and I highly recommend this one as well. If you love Kit Morgan stories, you are guaranteed to love this one too.

This was a good clean romance story. I enjoy mail-order bride stories. I didn't like the way some of the characters enunciated their words. I know everyone does not speak correctly, but it would have made the story easier to read. I didn't think the scene where heroine showed the hero her issue was realistic. I don't think anyone would remove their clothing in front of someone they had yet to be intimate with out in the open no matter how secluded it was in that area (this was a clean moment, nothing inappropriate mentioned). The storyline was a somewhat different situation, and I enjoyed reading this story.

If you enjoy Mail-Order Bride stories you will not be disappointed with the Mail-Order Bride Ink: Dear Mr. ... series. You cannot help coming away feeling good after reading about Oscar and Lily White. Excellent writing by Kit Morgan! The ultimate storyteller, she makes you feel like you know these people and wish you could be right there with them. I love the humor and personalities of these characters. I have read all four of the Dear Mr. Mail-Order Bride Ink novels and I am looking forward to the next one! This book was hard to out down. Thank you for this series.

I so enjoyed this wonderful book, as Kit takes you to visit Clear Creek and see old friends and meet new one too, what a fantastic series. I loved Mr.White. He was a real hero with a tender loving heart. The setting written around the stage coach stop was just perfect. So many new characters to meet,with some very interesting personalities. It's a feel good book, it had me with tears in my eyes and really laughing out loud! I hope there are more in this series to follow.

Great story , kept you on your toes, wondering what will happen next !! LeArn know my how to act kept someone for who they are from the inside.. As the saying goes.don't judge a book by the cover. In this story you will understand the true mea Ming of love .Hopefully Kit will ha e another book out soon.!!

Love can overcome physical scars and handicaps. Even with disfigured faces and bodies, and Henry's mental shortcomings, the White family gave their love freely to each other and everyone they met. They prayed and trusted God to do things His way and in His own time.

Loved the book. I have read all of Ms Morgan's books and she has never let me down. This was another captivating tale of finding love and Faith in the eyes of the main characters to bring a family together in ways that are right in the Times when things were tough. She has a way of intertwining her characters from all her books together and keeping them all alive. That is what makes her books five stars.
