Too old for current regs.

I work for disability and wondered if any of these books would actually help anyone, and I think this is one of the best I have read. If I were to become disabled, I would definately use this book when I had to fill out all the forms.

5 years old material, doesn't cover todays forms

Informative book, however not quite as well written or thorough as a few others I've read.

I had a Lumbar Fusion from L2 TO S1 in May of 2012 and was getting worse instead of getting better and it terified me to file for SSDI. The operation left me with a severe case of very painful flat back. I heard the stories about waiting for months or years to get an answer or getting a lawyer to help with the process to win A case. I just bought the book, read it, and did exactly what Trudi outlined. Decent book. Covers the majority of the basics, found the information to be fairly useful. When I bought this book I read a review from a person who said they never rely on just one book, but always use at least two of them together to try to get the whole picture. I did the same and used this book as well as the Antigua and Barbuda Island guide by Christopher Beale. I found this book to be more informative on the "how the island works" end of things, I found the other a better guide as far as what life is like on the island. Between the two of them and some common sense, we had a great trip.

I couldn't find many guides on Antigua. I ended up buying both this one and the Insight Guide. We used the Rough Guide more as it was organized in a way that I preferred and seemed to contain more information. At the end of the day, it's really not that hard to find your way around Antigua - nothing is terribly far away (it takes ~1/2 hour to drive across the island), the roads are decent, and there aren't too many twists and turns to get lost. There are only a few sights that you really ought to see and the rest of the time is easily filled at beaches (there are an endless number of pristine, undeveloped, private beaches and a few developed ones that seem to attract the masses if you prefer that sort of thing) doing whatever you like to do at beaches. My only complaint is that it would have been nice to have a solid snorkelling guide. For some reason, we had the impression that Antigua has quality snorkelling, but we did not find much of it (and the guides did not help in this regard). It seems there are about three places with reefs offshore that you can boat to, and one reef that you can access from onshore that is decent, but really, snorkelling is not one of the big features of the island and most beaches are sandy (and pristine - really lovely).Anyway, you really can't go wrong visiting this island. I would put some quality thought into what part of the island you would like to stay before you go. It really depends on what you are seeking: if you like to be around touristy crowds, go to St. John's or Jolly Harbour, if you are seeking a different, more private experience, I would head South and/or East.Best of luck!

Have not had a chance to use this book for touring the islands since we won't be traveling to Antigua/Barbuda for another 5 mo., but it appears to be the most comprehensive guide a tourist can buy for these places. If it's anything like the Rough Guide we used for Trinidad/Tobago, it should have the islanders in awe of all the information it contains. Looking forward to carrying all around Antigua & Barbuda when we get there.

This book neglects to mention one important aspect about traveling to Antigua. You must pay $20 USD in cash to get out of the country. When I was there, both ATM machines were out and no one seemed to care.

If you're planning on heading to Antigua and Barbuda and, like me, value a guidebook, then the Rough Guide Directions is essentially your only option within major guidebook circles. Fodors/Frommers/Lonely Planet/Moon/Eyewitness don't bother with destinations so small, so Rough Guide it is unless you're willing to get a "Caribbean" type compendium or you want to try something offbeat. Thankfully, this is a pretty good guidebook, but there are two things you should know before you purchase it...Number 1: this book is *old.* The publishing date says 2007, which means it was probably written in 2006. That's over six years ago now. I suppose the lack of competition doesn't give them a big incentive to publish a new one, but heck I feel leery of guidebooks which are two years old, let alone six. Now it should be mentioned that I didn't actually run into any troubles, with the exceptions of some price disparities, from the old guide--no restaurants that the book recommended had closed, for example. However, I would imagine that some of the restaurants/hotels/etc written up by the book have changed or don't exist any more.Number 2: Antigua can be a confusing place to drive around, and the guidebook could do a better job with directions. There are some maps in the book of course, but I would recommend picking up a bigger one at a car rental agency (assuming you're driving) because I had significant trouble getting around. The book isn't terrible with its directions, and by and large I did find everything I was trying to reach, but often there was a lot of frustration before getting there.Other than those two issues, however, this is a nice guide. Lots of pretty pictures, clear organization, good recommendations, etc. I am happy I purchased it for my trip. As long as you know its limitations going in, I think you'll be fine.

This book was well written, organized, and designed. The maps throughout the book were informative and helpful. (Although we did not use them for driving, just for orienting ourselves on the island and for figuring out what to do and where, we used taxis). Nice photos and clear and easy to understand system of listing places to stay, eat and things to do.Almost all of the prices are outdated, so our trip was even more expensive than we accounted for. And some store times were outdated, but that kind of stuff is to be expected.Whenever I travel I usually buy two books about my destination to be able to compare and see different points of view. And although this book was by far the more comprehensive of the two, the other book Antigua and Barbuda: Island Guide by Christopher Beale did have more emphatic personal recommendations which I found useful. Although Beale's book had faults, I found that the combination of the two books to be complementary.

I reference this book often to help me in my work. I've had this book for about a year and it has been extremely helpful.It's been great at expaining concept and showing examples.I reccomend it for for beginning and intermidiate users of DB2.

Great Book to learn DB2

I use this book at work all the time for projects where we are adding DB2 to old COBOL programs. I have a little bit of SQL experience, so I generally use this book as a reference. It also helps me use a variety of DB2 features to make the queries simpler and do what I really want.

Good book for learning DB2. Nice to have as a reference guide and worked well with the course I attended.

The book that I bought is used but it looks like new. The only negative thing that I want to say is that I bought in October 4th and the book arrived in November 24th, I know that I live far away here in Brazil but that is the negative thing about the purchase. Great Book / Excellent Quality Book

This is an excellent resource for all those baffled programmers who need to learn DB2 fast. Thos book provides clear-cut examples, syntax, and the results of the various SQL commands that are most likely to be needed by any programmer. All the basics from simple SELECT statements are covered all the way up to ORDER BY clauses, joins and so on. A special chapter on using SPUFI was also a big help. The emphasis here is on the COBOL language and mainframe computers, but it is an excellent learning tool for anyone. The book teaches by example and can be finished easily within a week (The example programs are what make it look so big). A must-read for anyone interested in relationall databases.

I made my daughter a slime basket for Christmas. I used this book to help me determine what supplies I needed to buy. I think we have made almost all the different types listed in here. Very user friendly and easy to read!

This was a gift for a birthday. They loved it! We got helpful tips on getting out of clothes and cushions which Mom appreciated and we got the guts to try a bunch of different supplies in our slime experiments. Overall, a great purchase!

This book has great photos, clear directions, valuable ideas, and leads to 20 wonderful slime projects. The author includes variations and tips. The book even deals with how to troubleshoot common problems. Both of my granddaughters (ages 10 and 11) have used it many times. They love it!

Great book for any slime lover. The book has a "Getting Started" section which proved very helpful. 99% of the slime recipes we tried turned out perfect!

Bought for my granddaughter for Christmas and she continues to experiment with new recipes. Slime turns out perfect every time. Easy to understand directions. Pictures are awesome! Even I like the book.

As a long -time Toastmaster, I wasn't sure how much "new information" I would obtain by reading this book. I am grateful that I gave it a chance. I recently began considering participating in something like TED, but I know I need something extra to help me through the process. The tips given, although common sense to someone who speaks often, may significantly help someone who needs to figure out how to effectively communicate his thoughts to a group of people. I found some nuggets and some takeaways that I can use to polish my next speech. I'll definitely use this book as an additional resource for my speeches.

I especially appreciate this book (and the other books by Akash Karia) because they make sense to an ordinary person like me who has to do presentations for their job. The language and steps are all well laid out for someone who does not speak at level of those who do the speech circuit, but for someone who is required to do these presentations at the pleasure of management. They were not part of my original job description so I needed a mentor I could relate to and understand. The information relates to any presenter and can benefit any level of speaker. I am pleased with how much better I am doing at it after following these helpful guidelines.

As a professional speaker and speaker's trainer, I have read many books on the topic of public speaking. How To Deliver a Great Ted Talk, by Akash Karia, is an excellent primer for those who want to learn the formula for structuring a great talk. The outline that the author has provided is simple to follow and it can be used to prepare for any talk. I like that he has linked to some of the more popular Ted talks as it gives the reader a frame of reference for the subject at hand. One can learn the basic fundamentals of speaking from this book. However, like other activities such as dancing, swimming, or riding a bicycle you can read about it all day long but in the end the only way to become proficient, is to do it over, and over, and over again.

I am so glad I read this book while I was preparing to give a talk to an audience of mental health professionals. It is chock full of ideas, clearly written, and enthusiastically supportive. And not a time consuming read. I think he uses his attention getting and holding ideas for speeches in the writing of the book itself. I was never bored. I strongly recommend it for anyone who speaks in public.

"Presentation secrets" is precisely what Karia delivers with this practical, step-by-step guide to crafting a powerful presentation. The book begins by helping you plan out the big end goals for your presentation - what you want your audience to feel and take away from it.Karia then shows you step by the precisely how to do it - walking you through how to effectively open the presentation, captivate attention throughout, and then close so that the message sticks. Awesome book! I love Akash's material and I am a huge fan.. Gets right to the point and doesn't waste your time with useless information just to pad his books. This title is one of my favorites and as a speaker/preacher/teacher I have learned quite a bit about presentations in general. Keep cranking them out Akash!

For those looking for a comprehensive and easy to use guide to stunning presentations there is no better source. I particularly liked the clear structure as well as relevant and inspiring examples. The numerous hints helped me improve presentations both for myself and for colleagues at work. I will sure be coming back for to this book for more inspiration.

There's nothing surprising, here, but the bits about how to use story were very helpful, in constructing a recent talk. I speak somewhat regularly to groups of 200-500, and found that I had such a good coach, that I do most of what's here. It did help me categorize some of the technique that I've seen and put into practice, and It gave me a set of specific ways to evaluate what I am doing, as I create a persuasive talk - from content, to rhetoric, to delivery. Highly recommended - despite the fact that the chapter titles, and table of contents paginations are not accurate (looks embarrassingly like a copy-paste error on the editor's/publisher's part). Great tool to help you comprehensively examine your preparation.

Tony Crisp has had a long working relationship with dreams. In 1972 he wrote one of the earliest self-help books on dreams. In those years he also started one of the first human growth centers in the U.K., teaching people how to use dreams and the dream process for healing and personal growth. I ordered a digital copy of the Dream Dictionary for my Kindle. It is an OK dream dictionary, but, I didn't realize how impractical it would be to search through it while on the Kindle, since you are looking for dream symbols in alphabetical order, and there is no index by letter to aid the search. You just sort of have to guess where one letter ends and the next one begins, and it just doesn't work very well on the Kindle. This is one reference book that definitely works better as a real book!

I have the Dell paperback version of Tony Crisp's "Dream Dictionary" and the thing I love about it is it has hundreds of examples of actual dreams that relate to various entries. To me, reading about the actual dreams is way more interesting than reading about the various dream theories, which may or may not have any validity. There's a Kafkaesque quality to the dream world: the stilted logic, the dramatic twists, the surreal imagery. I find it fascinating. When I saw the ebook version available for Kindle, I forked over the eight bucks and downloaded it. I am disappointed. Unfortunately, most of the dream examples have been axed from this ebook edition, basically gutting the book of its most intriguing quality. The new version is about on par with the rest of the titles in the overcrowded "dream dictionary" category. Maybe they'll fix it in a future edition, but until then, if you have an interest in dreams, track down the paperback. Mine has a publication date of December 1991. It is vastly better than this one.

I was looking for a dream dictionary I read several years ago because I found it really helpful. Only to discover that this was actually a "updated" version of the one a family member has.To me an update would be adding more to the book. I would actually consider this a re-write as the same symbols have completely different meanings from the other book. I personally felt disapointed finding this out.Someone who has not read any of Tony Crisp' s other dream books may really like this book. The symbols and meanings are well described.

I purchased this book as I had purchased a cell phone app Dream Dictionary that was very useful and unlike and other dream dictionary I've seen. I looked up the app info and found the author to be Tony Crisp. The phone Dream Dictionary is a great quick tool, but only contains a small fraction of the topics available in the book.Tony Crisp's Dream Dictionary will really help you to interpret your dreams. It doesn't offer a black and white definition of a symbol in your dream. Rather, you will find that symbols can represent similar, yet different, meanings depending on how those symbols were featured in the dream and how you did or did not intereact with those symbols. Tony Crisp gives more information and asks just the right questions to help you discover what is going on in your mind as you sleep. Furthermore, for dreams that leave you with a bad feeling or are unresolved, you will often find useful suggestions that will allow you to resolve those issues in your waking life.Thrown in are a few pieces of information regarding the function of dreams and sleep in our lives. As I'm a great reader of books about brain formation, brain function, and neuroscience, I have found nothing to date to argue any of the points he has made.I find most dream dictionaries to be very "new age" and metaphysical. But the Tony Crisp Dream Dictionary is more analytical in its approach, somewhat like having your very own therapist to help you sort out your mind's thoughts.

If you have always wanted to know what your dreams mean then this book is perfect for you! It’s a fun interesting & easy read with in depth dream descriptions. I use this all the time!

This was impossible to use in the kindle form....no way to search particular topics. A dud!

This is a wonderful book for interpreting dreams. I have been interpreting dreams for over twenty years and this is the best book I've found. It was obviously written by someone who knows the subconscious (aka unconscious) and how it works. There are multiple suggestions for every symbol so you can pick the one that fits your dream. There are also some excellent exercises for helping you interpret your own dreams. The exercises are scattered through the book so you have to look through it to find them but it is worth the time.

I am very in to dreams and picking out the images and figuring out what they mean based on my own reflection... but Dream Dictionaries, I don't care who the author is, is NOT the way to figure the meaning to your dreams.Your dreams are absolutely specific to who you are on the inside. Your mind is not the mind of Tony Crisp. If you are walking down a white gravel path and see a tree with only one leaf to your right, and a tree with complete foliage to your left, this will mean one thing to you, and an entirely different thing to someone else who has had different experiences throughout their life and how they perceive the number one, the subject of a tree, and if they favor left or right, and so on... Dream dictionaries will show you the explanations to dreams of someone who is not you, and will be inaccurate because of this.If you want to learn more about your dreams, right them out directly after you wake up. Read through it after and pick out the images that you see stick out the most and seem to have the most importance, you will know, trust yourself. You will see a pattern, and you will see clearly what your subconscious is trying to point out to you.The content in this book is well written and very organized. I hate to give it less than 5 stars. It deserves 5 ;)

A truly wonderful book with many levels of meaning--if the reader wishes it. For me, it was the story of survival against change, time, nature, and generally stacked odds. The author has populated and adorned this character-rich story with some of the most warm-hearted, the heroic, the loyal and the optimistic humans imaginable. Animals are not left out either, playing anthropomorphic roles as well as representing the existential menace of nature. With the various tiers of meanings built in to the novel, it remains a terrific story of mostly good people struggling to maintain their daily footing in a fading small town in northern Minnesota. Recovery from the loss of disappeared love ones, former success and the ebbing of hope are all woven into these lives. Despite those general themes, these individual stories are told with humor, hope and humane insight.The main character and protagonist in "Virgil Wander" is the fore-named Virgil Wander himself. As the book opens, he has had a near death experience and for the remainder of the story, is in a recovery phase. That process extends way beyond the near fatal accident, as Virgil has been a central witness to his town's long-fade. As owner of an ancient movie theater, he has been able to measure the decline through the gradual drop in movie tickets sold, but he has also seen the deaths of good friends, the migration out of others and the physical deterioration of buildings and businesses.The redemption and rehab of Virgil and the town itself starts to materialize with the arrival of a Norwegian golden ager looking for a connection with a lost son--one of the town's legendary citizens. This leads to a kind of adoption by the man of the disabled Virgil; and in turn puts Virgil in a new place with the family of Norwegian's son.Bottom line here, the novel is relentlessly optimistic and progressive in its march toward its conclusion. The characters are all highly original and sympathetic, in one way or the other. There are bonus features as well--much about film and the mechanics of cinemas; animals and critters that are often more than secondary characters, and fables that parallel the novel's events and that may actually have direct relevance to their outcomes.A wonderful read that I didn't want to end. Bravo Lief Enger!

After his car went over a cliff, Virgil is saved by the local scavenger. His health is frayed, but what seems to upset him more is that is memory is shot. While he remembers a lot of people, he doesn't always- or not completely. Words fail him- which is a terrible thing for a man that prides himself on his precise description.Then there's a stranger, Rune, who is the lost father of the man that disappeared 10 years ago- come to town after learning of the son he never knew in hopes of learning who the man was. The man and his hand made kite's call to something in Virgil and he finds himself becoming close to him.And the missing man's son, Bjorn. A teen now with his own passions and ambitions, wanting to make a life of his own- be more than "that man's son".Nadine- the gorgeous, enigmatic widow raising her son as she sends suitors away.Gavin- the Tom Sawyer-esk youth who hates school, loves fishing, and is far too intent on the status of his manhood.These characters and more pull at Virgil, move him as he strives to take control of his life and his aging theater.My thoughts:There have been several books in my life that I loved beyond reason. This is going to be one of them. Virgil was a fantastic character that I couldn't help but root for. His pain quickly became mine, and his mistakes more easy for me to forgive because I loved him so much. With gorgeous, sometimes whimsical descriptions and a steady pace, this book wasn't a fast read, but one that you lingered over; chuckling over a turn of phrase or sighing over a declaration. I filled page after page of quotes and character quirks. It was part imaginative imagery seen in the likes of Isabel Allede's Eva Luna, married with the quirk of small town living found in Fannie Flagg's Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. Both are favorites of mine and I could not fail to be charmed by a book that could incorporate what was magical about each.Another thing I loved was seeing the different characters grow and change through Virgil's eyes. There was a lot of growth in almost all characters without ever derailing from the story being about Virgil- his life and observations. Gavin, especially went from a young Tom Sawyer-type imp to a strong man-boy with a fishy arch nemesis. I loved these characters, and was sad to see the final page. For me, this is a five star book.As far as the adult content goes there's some language and light substance abuse, nothing major. I would give it a four. It's geared toward adults but an older teen might like it.I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book from Netgalley and Grove Press in exchange for an honest review. My thanks! I loved it so much that I have preordered the hardback novel from Amazon.

I wish that every book I picked up was as wonderful as Virgil Wander by Leif Enger. It is not a page turner. It is a character driven tale that takes it's time to unfold. The author is a master in conjuring life in a small Minnesota town. The weather, the movies, longing, love, revenge, redemption are all here, but not in a heavy handed way. I was satisfied to enjoy Leif Enger's subtle writing style. I didn't need anything to happen for long stretches in this story; I was content to to sit back and enjoy the work of a master. Enger writes about morality, but not in a preachy way. Grace and restoration are here but you can barely notice them until they seep in unconsciously. This is the rare book that I could read 2 or 3 times. Like Kazuo Ishiguro and Ian McEwan, Enger has the extremely rare ability to make you feel something that you might not pick up with your brain. It could be another 10 years before he publishes again, but I will read anything that he puts out.

I've heard good things about Leif Enger, but I don't think his style is for me.The characters were lovable and the town of Greenstone quaint. I love his descriptions and use of language. However, I kept waiting for the climax which was short lived toward the very end.The story had potential but in the end failed to engage. I kept waiting for the point. What are we doing here in this town, learning about these people? Still not sure.

This book is a quiet wander through America, lost, glimmering, strengthening, challenging, surprising, harsh and too beautiful to forget or take for granted.

In researching this book, Weatherford (Savages and Civilization), a professor of anthropology at Macalaster College, traveled thousands of miles, many on horseback, tracing Genghis Khan's steps into places unseen by Westerners since the khan's death and employing what he calls an "archeology of movement." Weatherford knows the story of the medieval Mongol conquests is gripping enough not to need superfluous embellishmentsâ€"the personalities and the wars they waged provide plenty of color and suspense. In just 25 years, in a manner that inspired the blitzkrieg, the Mongols conquered more lands and people than the Romans had in over 400 years. Without pausing for too many digressions, Weatherford's brisk description of the Mongol military campaign and its revolutionary aspects analyzes the rout of imperial China, a siege of Baghdad and the razing of numerous European castles. Adult/High School–An interesting, thought-provoking account of the conqueror's life and legacy. From his early years as the son of a widow abandoned by her clan, he showed remarkable ability as a charismatic leader and unifier. In 25 years, his army amassed a greater empire than the Romans had been able to achieve in 400. Whether judged on population or land area, it was twice as large as that of any other individual in history. This colorful retelling discusses many of the innovations that marked Khan's rule and contributed to his success. Although his name is now erroneously associated with terror and slaughter, he showed surprising restraint during a time when few others in power did. He allowed freedom of religion, encouraged free trade, developed a paper currency, and observed diplomatic immunity. As he encountered new cultures, he adopted or adapted their best practices, and constantly updated his military strategies. Although Khan's death occurs at the midpoint of this book, the tales of his survivors' exploits and the gradual fall of the Mongol dynasties are engaging and informative. This is a well written, nicely flowing work. The author, Jack Weatherford, traces the life and time of Genghis Khan, born as Temujin, and his descendants. He notes the impact of the plague on the Mongols and how that plague spread, to some extent by the Mongols. And he makes the claim that the Mongols had an appreciable impact on the West's Renaissance.Weatherford begins by noting the purpose of his book (Page xxxv): "The focus remains on the mission of our work: to understand Genghis Khan and his impact on world history." The book is in three parts: first, Genghis Khan's rise to power and the development of the Mongol Empire; second, the period when the Mongols became a major world player, until the empire began devouring itself with internecine warfare; third, the effect of the Mongols on the development of modern society. There is a useful genealogy at the start of the book; however, the book would have benefited greatly with an ample supply of maps, so that the reader could trace developments geographically.The book does a terrific job of describing Khan's background--from his youth until he began developing a powerhouse, to his death. His military forces used innovative tactics that baffled his opponents, adapting Mongol warriors' mobility to advantage. The Mongols expanded their sway until--at its greatest point, it was larger than the Roman Empire at its height. It stretched, in 1260, from China to Moscow and Kiev, and to the doorsteps of Vienna, from Baghdad to Samarkand.Weatherford goes on to discuss the Empire after Genghis Khan's death. It continued to function until the combat among his sons led to more and more internal troubles. This depiction of internal problems, again, is well done.It amazes me how detailed is the discussion of people and events from so long ago.However, when he comes to argue that the Mongol Empire sparked the Renaissance and later European history, It appears to me that his grasp exceeds his reach. I am not certain that quoting Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" with references to Genghis Khan (as part of his argument) is compelling. Nonetheless, while I did not find his case so convincing, it did cause me to reflect on important historical issues, and that--in itself--is a contribution.In short, a well done book on the Mongol Empire and its founder. Worth taking a look at. . . .

I was very excited for this book and the ambitiousness of its scope, but found myself underwhelmed. It's entertaining and educational, I found myself wanting more in multiple respects. More details, more evidence, more expansive coverage.The book can't quite seem to decide what it wants to be. Is it a thesis of how the Mongol empire provided foundational technologies and practices of the modern age? Is it a biography of Genghis Khan? Is it a history of the Mongol empire? It turns out to be a haphazard mix of all three, with major shortcomings on all fronts.As a broader anthropological thesis about the impact of Genghis Khan, Weatherford makes a very compelling case that the Mongol empire contained some then-innovative ASPECTS of modern ideals (e.g. religious tolerance, meritocracy, globalization of commerce, public schooling, paper currency, among others). He convincingly argues that the Mongols spread good ideas from one region of the empire to another, and combined those ideas in novel ways. He doesn't do a very good job of arguing that these innovations formed the basis of the modernity, spread into the broader world, and continued into today. Much of his focus is also on developments after the death of Genghis, particularly on Kubalai. While this makes sense from a historical narrative perspective, it's harder to tie the achievements of Kubalai back to Genghis, when the former took power 33 years after the latter's death, following the reign of three other Great Khans. Weatherford also mostly ignores developments in the other Khan lineages upon Kubalai taking the (disputed) title of Great Khan. He makes some ambitious and expansive claims, but doesn't provide compelling evidence. A few that caught my eyes are that Mongol culture was a foundational precursor to the European Renaissance or that the Nazi's blitzkrieg strategy was based on the study of Mongolian battle tactics. He could well be right, but I wasn't convinced of his conclusions on the basis of the evidence he presented.As a biography, I didn't get much of a feel for Genghis Khan man outside of his tactical brilliance and shrewdness for exploiting public sentiment. I felt I had a much better sense of the character of Ogodei and Kubalai Khan than Genghis himself. Granted, much of that is probably due to lack of good contemporaneous primary sources due to historical reasons, and Weatherford seems to feel that the main source of truth is The Secret History of the Mongols, a history written either late in Temujin's life or shortly after his death. But much of the Secret History seems like after the fact mythmaking, such as when it claims that Temujin was born with a blood clot in his fist, portending great leadership. Broadly there's a lot of projection and conjecture about how he must have felt and thought. For example Weatherford sometimes posits that perhaps Khan was just trying to protect his family, his tribe, and his way of life, rather than conquer the known world. I don't know. Given the lack of good primary sources, I'd rather he leaned more on secondary sources with the necessary qualifications, or kept it more concise and stuck to the facts. As is, the biographical portions awkwardly straddles the line between idle conjecture and dry "and then this happened".Finally as far as the broader Mongol empire is concerned, the focus is surprisingly narrow and cursory on the broader conquest. It has a pretty good discussion of broader strategy, tactics, and specific applications, but Weatherford mostly focuses on a couple campaigns (European campaigns of Ogodei Khan, Kubalai's campaigns into Sung China, and Genghis' campaigns in Mongolia, against the Jurched, and against the Khwarizm). Meanwhile he'll casually drop "And by this point the Mongols had dominion over Korea" without explaining how the Mongols adapted their steppe calvary tactics to the mountains and monsoons of Korea, while claiming the Mongols were stopped cold going out of their steppe comfort zone into the tropics of southern India or the forests of Western Europe. He sets up an epic conflict in Egypt an army of with former slav slaves, but kind of cursorily refers to it while suddenly jumping 20 years in to the future before jumping back. And as stated above, he has a pretty heavy focus on Kubalai, only briefly touching on the Ilkhanate in Persia and the Golden Horde in Eastern Europe.In all, I enjoyed the book and I'm not swayed by other criticism I've seen about whitewashing the character of a despot. I appreciate Weatherford trying to bring more nuance to a much caricatured man and culture. But couldn't help but think that the book is less than the sum of its parts, and could have been much more.

Totally changed my perception of geopolitics-really! This book, thoroughly researched, blasts the myths surrounding Ghenghis Khan and demonstrates his wisdom and courage as a leader. Perhaps more importantly, it contributes invaluable knowledge about the role of the Mongols in reshaping the world to forge trade routes, developing societies where many religions coexisted peacefully and exploding many of our prior myths about the savagery of the Mongol Horde. One of the most fascinating books on history I have read.

A well written and well read (in terms of the audio version) book on the Mongol Empire romthe time of Genghis Khan through the reign of Kubulai Khan. This book gives great detail into the early life of Tenmugen and the struggles and realities of living during a tumultuous period. The book isnt without its faults however, the author seems to go to great lengths to portray Genghis and the Mongols as bringers of peace and welfare. At one point he even goes so far as to suggest that a four year gap in the documentation of public executions must suggest that the Mongols did not execute. It seems like a rash assumption considering that the amount of death that followed the Mongol hoard would make Hitler jealous. All together it is an interesting read but please be aware that it comes through a very pro Mongol lens.

Very interesting and to me quite unknown history of Genghis and Kubilai Khan. The connection between Kubilai Khan and the Forbidden city as well as the connection between the Mongols and the Indian Moghuls were such a surprise. The origins of certain terms like 'horde' or 'hurray' were so interesting!The progressiveness of some of the Mongol ideas in the 13 th century were totally unexpexted.An amazing experience and a very well written history.
