What a let down. the author blew an opportunity of telling funny stories about their assimilation to NYCRosie is an absolute wimp in the sequel. Why has she been marginalized?I kept waiting for the story to capture me. It never did.Why is the Rosie effect all about Don's disfunctional male friends?I wish I had skipped the sequel.

This book didn't live up to my expectations after reading the Rosie Project which I thoroughly enjoyed. What I enjoyed about the first book was that it was so easy to see things from Don's point of view because his thinking was SO logical but you wanted to be able to tell him to STOP because acting on how he thinks is in general not compatible with how the world works. Inevitably this led to all sorts of scrapes and awkward moments and had me laughing out loud. I think maybe it was a bit unbelievable to take Don's world a step further in a second book. Finding love in book 1 was such a major achievement for Don I'm not sure married life, living in New York, new friends (making friends was almost impossible for him prior to this) and overall such a huge change to his OCD / Asperger's world would have worked. I liked where we left off in The Rosie Project. I think what I found particularly disappointing is that the Rosie in book 2 in completely different than the Rosie in book 1. What we loved about her was that she was a quirky barmaid, an unconventional dresser, in other words the opposite to everything Don thought fitted a wife profile. But this gets spoiled by the fact that she only works as a barmaid because she wants to study medicine. So in the Rosie effect she's a serious person, permanently stressed because she's writing up her PhD (or something) and she's pregnant. She seems to be constantly in her room writing away and while poor Don is doing his best (in his own special way) to prepare for fatherhood she completely shuts him out, doesn't communicate her feelings to him and didn't feature much in the book really. While there were a few smiles in there it was a much more serious and I'm afraid a bit of a dull book.

I jumped right into this book after reading "The Rosie Project" because I was intrigued with the characters and wanted to see how they would progress. Ugh, big mistake!! The author completely lost all of the charm and the quirky, subtle humor of the first book. He lurches through changes in tone, introduces more unlikable characters and unlikely situations with preposterous assumptions and conclusions. Don's "cluelessness" was innocent, sweet and earnest as he looked for love and tried to understand it in the first book; here it is insensitive, cloddish, deceitful and dangerous. Rosie is frightfully underwritten and is not the least bit realistic as a pregnant woman. Stay away from this insipid, lousy sequel.

The Rosie Effect will not make much sense unless you read the first book The Rosie Project. The author did his best to get into the mind of a person affected by high functioning autism although I never got the impression that the character, Don, considered himself as being on the autism spectrum as he never identified himself as such but only claimed that he was wired differently. He seemed to be shocked and offended when compared to "RainMain" , the Dustin Hoffman movie's autistic character, by a minor character and even goes so far as to say that a world full of Rainman would be dysfunctional and a disaster, but a world full of people like him world be organized and efficient. I disagree on that point. His logic in thinking this is that he believes he can function without help, he has a job and is now married whereas Rainman is dependent, can't get a job and makes no contribution to society. Yet he ignores the fact that he has around him people to help him cope and filter and understand and help him maneuver through the world's conceived insanity. Without them he is almost unemployable himself and probably couldn't hold a job if it weren't for an understanding Dean who can look beyond his annoying quirkiness and set him up so that he can be successful in the academic setting. The Dean at Columbia even had to get him a special Visa in order for him to be able to get on a plane and has acquired him special privileges through security that even include the use of the airport lounge as well as other preferential treatment. Although in his mind, he thinks he deserves it because he gave the airport security on numerous occasions a discourse in mind numbing detail on all the security risks and how to make it more efficient. In truth, without the intercession of the Dean he would probably be put on the terrorist watch list and never allowed to fly again. As such I found that particular incite on Rainman's dependent state to be very shortsighted and a little on the condescending side. Especially since I happen to have a son that is more like Rainman and less like Don, the main character. He has difficulty communicating, tends to hyper focus on laundry ( which is a plus in my book, I hate doing laundry) but has a job, is learning to drive and is a valued member of our family. Who knows what Rainman could have done had he not been institutionalized and expected to do nothing but sit and watch tv. My son also has one thing that Don doesn't. He doesn't feel the need to learn to deceive and lie. Which unfortunately is what happens to Don. Don must learn empathy for his pregnant wife, make plans to solve everyone else's problems while his own marriage falls into the dumps and in the process learns to keep secrets and deceive her in order to keep her from being stressed. She in turn thinks he is disconnected with the baby and is concerned about his ability to bond and be the Father that she wants. But she has her own set of debilitating problems. He feels he can't talk to her about his plans for becoming the perfect husband and father because he takes everything she says literally when she says she doesn't want to talk about it. Then to make matters worse he has to lie and deceive her about all the mishaps he has gotten himself into with the law by innocently taking the advice of a live-in psychologist to study children by watching them on the playground (Apparently in New York that is illegal especially to video tape them if you are not at the park with another child under the age of 12.) He doesn't want to tell her or get her involved because he is afraid of raising her cortisol level due to stress and thus harming the baby, which he refers to as Bud (Baby under development). The rest of the book is just one bad decision after another by both main characters as they try to cope and overcome their own forms of disabling behaviors. That's not to say it isn't funny at times, it was just sad as a parent of a child with autism to see one that starts out honest and to the point, become entwined in a web of lies because that is more socially acceptable. For that purpose I think it is a good read. As children we start out innocent, then we learn to lie and put on our masks in order to make ourselves cool and fit in. I'm not sure when that begins but it is a shame that it has to happen especially when everyone touts just be yourself. Unless of course your are considered weird by the majority of people in the room. Then pretend your someone else.In short it is a good book worth the read. On the side it is also very much on the nose when it discusses the problems of clinical studies and how biases contaminate them, but definitely read the The Rosie Project first or you won't appreciate the characters as much and you might get a little lost on who is who.

I didn't enjoy The Rosie Effect as much as I enjoyed The Rosie Project. The main reason? Rosie was barely a part of the story-line. In hindsight, that might have been a blessing though, as her character was just awful in the sequel. She was mean, nasty, self-centered, and more than little negative about Don. Pregnancy does a lot of things to you body, yes, but one thing it doesn't do is turn you from a good person into a monster. The Rosie Effect focused more on Don with Gene, Don with Dave, Don with George, and Don with a horribly bigoted, narrow-minded woman named Lydia. Maybe calling it The Male Friend Project would have been a more appropriate title? The book just didn't resonate with me. I found myself feeling more aggravated with the characters (with the exception of Don) than anything else.If you enjoyed Don and Rosie's story in the first book, it's probably worth picking this one up and continuing their story, but I wouldn't expect the magic of the first novel.

I debated a moment on my rating. 4 or 5 stars? Although this is another fabulous mystery (actually three stories woven into one incredible tapestry) I admit to being bothered by the head jumping. With no warning whatsoever, the reader is bounced between three investigations. The batting back and forth made me feel like a spectator at a tennis match. Still, kudos to Louise Penny for attempting something I've never seen before. As the book opens, Gamache recuperates from physical, emotional, and mental wounds sustained in a case involving the attempted bombing of a large dam by a terrorist group. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and four other Surete officers were injured, and several others died. Flashbacks of the incident haunt Gamache. Did people die because of his mistakes? While he rests, he gets involved in another murder in the old part of Quebec City involving a national hero. The next paragraph, may transport the reader to a scene in Three Pines. Having second thoughts about Olivier's guilt, Gamache sent Inspector Beauvoir to reopen the investigation. (To understand this, you must read the previous book, The Brutal Telling.)This book is heavy on the history of Quebec and its early heroes. Good for readers who adore history, as I do, but the recital sometimes slows the action. Louise Penny possesses amazing insight into the human psyche, as she proves once again by including so much about twisted motives that drive men to murder.

Other reviews say it, but it bears repeating. This is the best yet, yet at times emotionally hard to read. Over the series I have wanted to pack up and move to Three Pines. I have been to Carnaval in Quebec City a few times--it's not far from where I live in Maine. I want to play Ruth in the movie version. Penny gets personalities in all their richness and complexity. I feel like I know these people. And this installment comes along and you have to watch as these "friends" work through considerable and various pain. One must go on to the next one...

I love Louise Penny books and have read them in sequence. This is the first one I struggled to finish. The story line involving Canadian history just got a bit tedious. Being American, I knew nothing of the history of Quebec. Although I'm interested in history in general, it just got a bit hard to slog through the long story line. Ms Penny usually has multiple story lines and I enjoyed the secondary story involving Oliver's guilt or innocence. I will continue to work my way through the rest of these wonderful books since I am hooked on her writing. I believe her to be an extremely skilled writer with a keen sense of humor. If you want to skip one of her series of Gamache novels...this would be the one.

While this is far from my favorite installment in the series it still gets 4 stars due to the authors exceptional writing. Part of the "back story" was obviously very sad and that was alright. The section about Bauvoir was good too. Now it was the section following Inspector Gamache that was a bit hard for me to follow along with. I suppose if I was a life long Canadian or better yet a life long Qubecoise I'm sure I would have embraced it a whole lot more. That being said I'll be starting the next book in a few days. All in all don't pass it by due to it being part of the series.

Hands down my FAVORITE book of this series so far. One storyline is tragic and compelling, incredibly unfolding in flashbacks, while the murder-mystery storyline is set in Quebec City in winter--beautifully described throughout. I found myself caring so much about these characters--as they tried to catch a killer in Quebec City, set right a wrong in Three Pines, and relive the incident that haunts them all. I could not put this one down! (But be sure to start this series from Book 1 and read them all--investing in these characters makes this particular book all that much more powerful, for sure.)

For people who love literary fiction and mystery novels, I can't praise this series enough. I've read every book in it, and each was excellent. This one is my favorite. It's set in Quebec City, where we plan to vacation this summer (thanks to the book!). The Beautiful Mystery (set in a monastery), is my next favorite, but each book brings new poetry, more enlightenment, and a bit of French vocabulary,--all the while getting deeper into the beloved, recurring characters of "Three Pines," a fictional Canadian village that people find when they need it, and introducing new ones. It isn't necessary to read the books in order, but you'll probably enjoy the evolution of the characters even more if you do. I didn't think any mystery writer could replace Dorothy Sayers for me. I'm so glad to have found this one.

Her descriptions of Quebec City convinced us to go there, and glad we did. A beautiful place. And we took a walking tour based on places mentioned in Bury Your Dead including the Morrin Centre (library where the Lit-His Society met) and the place where Penny wrote much of the book.Several stories are woven into one. There are few breaks in the text and she inserts paragraphs about the Morin case frequently without warning. I never knew what was actually occurring, what was recollection in Gamache's mind. Better narrative organization would have helped. For this reason I can't give it a five-star. If you've read the previous volume in this series, it would help.Still, an interesting creative read with lots of detail about the life of the small Anglophone community in Francophone Quebec City.
