This book is fantastic. It starts out a bit simple in terms of the concepts but it gets really good as you get through it. The theme just gets built and I have taken things from this book that I will read and study daily. This was an interesting read for me. Dr. Monroe used biblical scripture to aid in the thought process of an individual purpose in life. I started reading this book and some other material in unison related to my purpose. Yes, I have finally found my purpose!

I have been impressed with this pastor ever since I first saw him on TV many years ago. His is a novel approach comparing our relationship to God as being between a manufacturer and a product. For some reason his explanations meant much more to me than many others I heard. It seemed more business like and it certainly appealed to me immensely. I simply cannot imagine him putting out a bad product! Having said that, his delivery is anything but cold but it does have a refreshing crispness to it.

I picked this book up a number of years ago when I got interested in understanding exploits. I've got experience writing code, and even some basic knowledge of networking. However it was difficult to get past the first 3 chapters. I stopped, and started elsewhere.This book will cover everything you need to know, and while that sounds great it's not for beginners or people looking to start quickly.I recommend seeking introductory knowledge elsewhere, C, OSI, TCP/IP, operating systems etc. Penetration Testing a Hands on Guide by Georgia Weidmam is a good way to get started with just getting hands on practice.Once I went back and got a grip on these concepts and had some practice the book was easier to understand and I came to appreciate it much more.Its not an easy read, and you need to have some solid understanding of the machine as a whole. After I played with buffer overflows in a VM I went back and appreciated chapter 0x200s coverage of registers and what they do.Buy this book only if you have a solid understanding of the computer as a whole, or will develop it alongside.The book will not get you started. It will definitely help you develop the understanding of why a buffer overflow script written in Python works, and how. If you want to get up and running quickly look elsewhere. But that doesn't mean it's a bad text, it's well done, insightful, and will help you understand the why of exploiting software.

I'm taking the PWK course from offensive security, going for my OSCP amd this book might as well be listed as the text book for the class it is full of good stuff and written so that even those completely new to this can understand and follow along, goes far more in depth than the course does (more courses by them go this in depth however) it has examples and a live linux cd to practice with its great.

This book outlines the fundamentals of hacking, yes. But chapter 2 alone has cleared up so much for me, pointers especially. If you're learning C and feel as if you're stuck in a rut (bored); this book will get you out of that rut in a fun way. It will give you that AhHa! moment where everything starts getting intuitive.

I'm not sure if I would recommend this book to beginners.When I first started reading it, everything made since and it was a smooth read.I should also note that I'm a Computer Science major at a university, with my strongest programming language being C++.In the beginning, the author uses the C programming language as a way of "introducing" the concept of programming and some intro-logic, etc.What didn't sit right with me: He continued with his beginner introduction to C, and then started referencing assembly language and memory registers.Isn't that somewhat of an overstep when it comes to the speed of learning this kind of material?I know nothing about assembly, nor the specifics of memory. I only know how memory is manipulated and moved. It still threw me off a little bit.Other than that, it's a good read and fairly informative.

Pretty heavy reading, but I enjoyed what I got through before I got bored. This is extremely technical: you're not going to read some pleasant narrative and become a master hacker here. This book assumes you're serious and wants to take you there, providing a CD to practice with and everything

This book is a great way to introduce yourself into software exploitation. That being said, this is not necessarily a beginner book. I'd recommend having some programming experience and a basic understanding of computer architecture, binary, base 8 numbering, etc.The book moves pretty quick, but is written concisely and to the point. It is a little dated, and probably always will be due to the nature of how fast these technologies develop. That being said, it is still a fantastic book, and I will most likely order subsequent editions as they come out.

They are still featured, but should not be used in new code. Some of these functions are:--+> inet_aton(), inet_ntoa() {should be replaced with inet_pton(), inet_atop()}--+> gethostbyname(), and another one I can't think of right now. {replace with getaddrinfo()}--+> Possibly other functions, I can't remember.~::[-] The CD is made for a 32bit processor, not a 64 bit processor - it won't work on a 64bit CPU.Seriously, every hacker should have this text. Everybody should read this book. It is a damn masterpiece. If you've not yet read it, I'm serious that you can learn from it. It will be very hard for noobies to understand this in one read. Seasoned programmers may even struggle a little bit, but most of them should be able to handle this with breeze.

Karl Barth and the Pietists is an indispensable tool for those that would seek to understand Barth in his time and in environment. If you are like me, you have probably heard more negative reactions to Barth than actual explanations or insightful judgments.This book does several things: one, it explains the story of Barth's thinking that led up to his writing of the epistle to the Romans. Secondly, it reports its reactions from the pieties take community. Thirdly, it examined in detail the clash between these two and the change that took place with in the Pietists and Karl Barth. Finally, it instructs the reader in the nature of proper course of action to take with in polemics, and as we can see this is difficult, if not almost impossible. However, with proper humility of heart and active openness of mind it can be done.Regarding Barth's epistle to the Romans. I have tried to read this again and again. It was not until I read this book in its entirety that I felt that I understood the tensions that Barth felt consciously and unconsciously when he was writing this book. The epistle to the Romans is akin to Hamlet's soliloquy "To be or not to be" that is, it is extremely famous, but most are ignorant of its actual content, or its placement with in the play. Most are aware that it is important, but hardly realize it's true significance, or understand its actual impact.The epistle to the Romans takes place within a stage most Americans are unaware of. Donald Dayton confesses to the reader in the forward: "I discovered a major difference between the German and American `evangelical' experience.""In the United States we generally assume what I call the conservative Liberal paradigm for the interpretation of `evangelicalism,' equating it with Protestant orthodoxy.""In Germany they speak much more of their reaction to that stream that he called Pietism.... I was used to the typical American distinction between `conservative' and `Liberal' theology. They spoke of the contrast between `academic' theology and `Church' theology. They took their clues not so much from the fundamentalist -- Modernist controversy as from the earlier Pietists concerns of the 17th and 18th century as they were reshape in the 19th century into various fellowships." (ix--x) In other words, they put a strong emphasis on pragmatic theology over proper theology. Pietism as a movement found their roots in a manned by the name of Nicholaus Ludwig Count Von Zinzendorf, who was a great impetus in the modern missionary movement. Indeed, it could be argued that he is the first mover of the modern missionary movement.If the student is not aware of these tensions within the German theological atmosphere, he will be unable to perceive Barth's interpretation of Romans. Also if the student of Barth is unaware that what we now have in our hands as the epistle to the Romans is actually a different book altogether than what initially wrote, then he will not be able to appreciate it.Busch carefully outlines and contrasts both books for the uninformed reader. He also places them in the reactionary context of the Pietists. The Pietists felt attacked on several levels by Barth. The main reason being was that they were not used to an opponent that criticized them from the basis of the Bible. The Pietists were used to Liberal attacks from the outside, not a biblical attack from a sympathizer of the pietistic movement.In the process of these reactions and Barth changed his thinking from a highly critical Liberal to a conservative with changed emphases of criticism. Barth did not become less critical of the pietistic movement, but he did lessen his attacked in a less destructive manner to a more corrective and remedial manner.The Pietists placed strong emphasis on inner experience, conversion, sanctification, and assurance of salvation. (If anyone is familiar with the major tenants put out by Pensacola Christian School, these concerns will sound vaguely familiar.) The critique that remained fairly uniform between his first and second epistle to the Romans was this: Christ is outside us and faith is not so easily possessed by us.The pietistic concern with simplicity and objectivity of spiritual growth had blinded of them to the outside concerns of social action and true Christian love. Barth was not denying that a Christian was converted or that he had experienced these things. He was concerned with how easily these Christians believe that they possessed these things. He was also concerned with the narrow interpretation that the Pietists presented. After reading this book, I have been more equipped to read through Karl Barth with a greater understanding and appreciation of his time and dilemmas. I am also reminded with what patience I must exert as I criticize and think through Christianity.
